When I first moved over to Sweden I had to settle for a cheap 2003 v70 (petrol) 2.5T 5cyl. Its done just under 200k miles. All ive done is changed the shocks on the suspension with regular servicing. The engine sounds solid like new and could go on for more years and miles. I see a lot of these old cars still going in Sweden still going strong. To sum up if you indeed to keep your car for a very long time and need durability go for 5 cyl. I think the only thing that could really kill off ownership is if the government raise tax or petrol to unaffordable levels. Going to keep mine for the time being as its served us well. In addition to that we have the 2016 xc70 D4 2.4 5cyl which was recently polestar’d up very pleased with this car too.

Was advised by my mechanic to go for the D5 when i started looking for mine. Getting 25/28 MPG round town and 40/50 MPG on long runs to the coast !

I totally agree, the 5 cylinder sound is so much better. Wife has a v40cc d2, 2.0l diesel 16plate.
3 years ago, when we got it, the engine sound was quiet on idle, but after 35k miles, it is louder then my 15 years old s80 /d5 😁. However, it is nippy and smoother than my s80.
Great video as always 👍

The VEA diesel engines (4 cyl) have issues with high oil consumption, related to too small oil rings on the pistons. The oldest D5s without DPF are probably the best. Your S80 has low mileage, stuff starts breaking after 150k miles (esp. sensors). I own a 99 C70 T5 with 230k mi, very robust engine but with age everything rubber/plastic needs replacement. I think it is worth it.

U missed the V60 D6 engine amazing 285 bhp hybrid D5 AWD. Still got my remaped S80 d5 220 bhp that 5 cylinder noise puts a smile on me everytime i put my foot down.

I used to own a 2012 c30 1.6 d2. Bought it at 35000 miles and sold it a few months ago with 115000. Didn't have any problems with it at all. Best car i ever had! Now, have an xc70 2.4 5 cylinder d4 and it is growing on me big time, though daily i think of my C30

I had 3 Volvos in my life and still have 2 of them. The first was a '86 740GLE with a diesel engine and manual transmission. Sold it because I just bought the second Volvo and basically was young and stupid. The second one which I still own is a 2.0T S60. The car is 20 years old now and will never sell it for 10 times the market price. Never had a major issue with it. Still on original shocks many parts are still from factory. The latest is another S60 a 2014 T5 with the 2.0 engine and Powershift transmission. So far no problems, however fuel consumption is much higher that with the old 5 cylinder. I average around 9.9l/100km with the 5 cylinder and 10.7/100km with the 4 cylinder. So far the 4 cylinder even though on paper has more HP and torque failed to impress me. When I looked for the P3 I searched for a unicorn engine that being the b5204t9 (5 cylinder with euro 5 emissions) but couldn't find one so I settled for the 4. Unfortunately can not find much info on that engine (manual and website states sold in certain markets only). Maybe your viewers have more info regarding what certain markets they talk about. Anyway great video

I’ve just bought got a 2018 xc60 D4. It’s capable of 50 something MPG but you won’t see anywhere near that around town. I’ve been getting 35mpg max/500 miles to a tank or there abouts.

The Engine doesn’t sound too great but it has grown on me, I think it’s a bit agricultural sounding but it pulls very well being Bi turbo. It did have a small problem with the air filter housing which vibrated and made the engine sound a lot worse but since I’ve sorted that it’s much quieter and nicer to drive.

I have a 2012 Volvo S80 auto with a D3 engine which is also 5 cylinder making 161bhp and £180 road tax. A good compromise.

I own a V40 6 speed auto with the 2.0 litre turbo "Drive E" petrol engine.

A great running engine, smooth, and more economical than the older 5 cylinder engine it replaced In the 8 years I have owned the car, it has been totally trouble free.

Whether it will have the long life that the 5 cylinder has a reputation for, I cannot say. The." Drive E" seies of engines haven't been around long enough to establish that yet.😉

Such amazing fuel consumption figures reported here. I have a petrol v70 2005. Lovely engine, quiet and smooth, has a gentle roar on accelerating, but fuel consumption not great

My D3 V70 has been on some longer runs & is managing to get an indicated 44.8 mpg.
£30 a year road tax is about as cheap as it gets for a 5 cylinder diesel.

Have a manual 04 s60 D5 bought on 40k miles of an old lady, now on 90k, did a new clutch, fly wheel and cam belt when I bought it 5 years ago, been told all my ownership “that will run for life” now… well I slowly daily drive it to work I have a better car for trashing… anyway my core plug some how twisted and it dropped all its oil over over the clutch… £1000 pound job on the d5 basically an engine out job everything gets lowered down engine stays hoisted.
, cars worth at tops £700 but I fixed it anyway becasue I’m daft. Probs should of used that grand towards a newer v60

I own a 5244t5 engine, manual. I wonder how long my turbo will last. I drive it rather calmly, 40 miles one way to work and 40 miles back, 3 times a week (work 12 shifts hours). It currently has 301, 000 kms. I bought it at 62, 800 kms. Didn't have a lot of trouble with it apart from O2 sensor once. Still the first turbo.

Hi, I own a V50 2.0d with nearly 255k miles on. I'm looking to get another volvo but 5 cylinder now but I have no heart to get rid od my old v50. I think I'll just keep it until it's beyond repair, but I wory I may go before it dies :)

I happened to come across your channel while doing some research on Volvo’s and I wanted to say I really like the content I’ve viewed so far. Very informative.

By chance do you have a strong recommendation on year for an s60 t5 I’m in the American market. Any additional advice would be greatly appreciated…thanks!
