I always wedge toenail clippings under my toilets for stability

They make plastic shims and that what I would recommend. Wood will rotten.

I quit caulking toilets altogether except in this very case. A very small leak can lead to a whole lot of damage under a toilet. Particularly for my rental properties I wanna know ASAP.

Everybody says " do this" or " don't do it this way" but i avoid all of this by going straight to the pros. The home Depot part time employee who was hired last week.

Don’t be afraid to use different seal instead of a wax, if toilet really wobbly. The wax seals can compress and move blocking flow on a severely wobbly toilet, and so; using a Rubber, Foam, Plastic, or Hybrid would be my choice instead; and might need some closet flange extensions as well. They’ve got a lot of diff types of toilet tech out there than the good old regular metal/PVC flanges and wax rings😉

Never caulk unless on concrete subfloor. You will rot out wood floors without knowing. Just fix the problem which is bad flange

I show this video to my helper all the time: How “not” to fix a wobbly toilet.

Caulking the toilet to the floor is fucking dumb. If the wax ring fails it traps the water under the toilet and rors out the subfloor. Also... Don't use wood shims. Most times if you're toilet wobbles you need to check your toilet flange and make sure it's secured to the floor and then make sure your toilet bolts are tight. This is bad advice. Cheap fix for people that want a quick fix. It's a "band aid" fix and will eventually have to be done properly. Save yourself time and money and just do it right the first time cuz I guarantee you will have to redo this fix within 6 months

Great advice and in New York state it is a code issue that we seal around the toilets for sanitary reasons us guys don't have the best aim

Seen the composite shims used for doors jambs? Try these, work great!

Not supposed to use wood shims. In residential caulking the base is optional. Depending on the flirting sometimes absence of caulk looks better and other times the caulking leaves a really clean look. However, in commercial applications it’s required by code to caulk the base and our wall mounted toilets and urinals. Keep doing it this way, that’s fine because it keeps us pros in business.

Another old school way is you can pull the toilet and mix up some plaster (yep that stuff used in school to make handprints for mommy) and then set toilet in that, fasten/secure toilet and silicone around toilet (leaving back open like Misha said) and job done.
8f gotta pull toilet to replace or redo floor, not an issue. The toilet will come right up off Plaster “of Paris” and with a stuff putty knife will come off floor no problem.
Just an old school tip if don’t wanna use shims or toilet so out of level that not wanting huge gap and seeing those shims (like a ¾ to 1½ gap, yeah, ugly looking at shims & caulking a gap that large; forget about it😅).
Cheers✌🏻

I have shimmed a toilet before, but if it wobbles more than a little, or the shims move and the wobble comes back, remove the toilet and see what's going on. Chances are, the wax ring is coming loose and you'll end up with a quality leak. If it's on the 2nd floor, guess where that water ends up.

Thanks for the end. I was gonna say don't caulk it 100%.

ABSOLUTELY DO NOT DO THIS!! Someone needs to monitor these uploads. smh

Nope. You'd end up breaking it when tightening as it is on a few points of contact. Also, you must never caulk it around because if it leaks you'll not see it.
