Discover the fascinating world of North America's longest railway routes! 🚂 Did you know the United States 🇺🇸 boasts the longest railroad network globally, stretching an impressive 180,000 miles? Embark on the longest passenger journey from Chicago ➡️ Los Angeles, traversing 7 states and covering 2,728 miles. This epic 65-hour trip, combining the Texas Eagle and the Sunset Limited operated by Amtrak, offers breathtaking views from the Mississippi River to the deserts of Arizona. But the U.S. route isn't the longest on the continent. That title belongs to Canada's 🇨🇦 “The Canadian”, a spectacular journey from Toronto to Vancouver. Covering 2,775 miles in 97 hours, this trip offers unparalleled scenic beauty and can cost up to $11,000 😳

And still we don't have high-speed rail, it is unbelievably crazy.

I'll be taking that route from LA to Chicago in about four days. Can't wait!

Just because it's the longest network doesn't make it any more practical, unfortunately.

My mother took the Canadian train route in 1951, from Toronto to Vancouver.
She was 11 years old and she said it was beautiful.
She even saw a moose in the woods when she was in Vancouver.🙂

All those tracks and not one bullet train for faster travel. That would contribute to less air pollution, less traffic, less non-renewable sources from being exhausted, reduce deaths resulting in wrecks, and much more

As someone from the UK, its nuts to hear traveling by air is cheaper than by train

I'm about to start planning a Summer Trip taking this Train - I'll just ride from Chicago back to Chicago and enjoy relaxing watching our country go bye one mile @ a time

Prior to 1970 it had a lot more rail miles and a lot more passenger service. And that route from Chicago to Los Angeles used to be home of the Santa Fe Superchief the proclaimed hotel on rails!

I live in Spain. You can take proper high speed trains across the country at 300km/hr and usually for less than €100 return. Competition on the tracks and in the air on the same routes. Strangely the TGV in France is famous cause the French are just good at marketing but the Spanish AVE is much more extensive and a heck of a lot cheaper. Second only to China in kilometres

Or you just… take the Southwest Chief directly from Chicago to LA.

The longest railroad in canada is not “the canadian” but the “canadian national”. It doesnt start in toronto, but actually starts in nova scotia, goes through toronto and still finishes in vancouver. Probably the longest single ride in north america.

It amazes me how much time and work building these railways took.

As a kid we took a train from Baltimore, MD to Seattle. We had to switch in Chicago, we had a 2 hour layover. All together it took us about 4 days to get there. It was really cool getting to see the country but I really wish we would have gotten sleeper cars instead of regular seats.

I know the comment section might turn into a blood bath, so here are some things to think about. The US is a freight train country, not a passenger train country. There is a reason the US has the largest road network in the world, even more than India and China that both have more than 4 times its population. We like our cars!
