The V-1 Flying bomb was the first of a series of Hitler's vengeance weapons designed to terrorize the British and their allies.

The worst part isn't hearing it, is NOT hearing it. It shuts its engine off moments before impact. So if it suddenly goes silent, it means the target is you or very close to you.

The little spinning propeller at the front is to measure the distance. If you know how often it spins in a certain amount of time, and know the speed of the rocket, you can estimate the distance travelled.
After the set number of revolutions, the bomb would drop down and explode on the ground. All you needed to know was the distance to your target (e.g. London).
Not a precise mechanism, but enough if you want to hit a large city.

Through decades of reading I know how the majority of these weapon systems worked, but have to say that the quality and accuracy of the information portrayed and in such a concise manner is absolutely TOP CLASS material. How come work of this calibre isn't highlighted more often by YT's piss poor algoritms?

My grandmother was in London during The Blitz. She used to tell me stories of when she and her girlfriend were working late nights cleaning an old theatre. She said you would hear the sirens and all the city lights would go out, then would come the sound of the V-1. She said hearing it was always OK. In fact you prefererred it because you knew where it was an could hear it fly over. She said the most terrifying moment if you were caught out on the street was when the V-1 engines cut off. 

Complete silence. 

She said that was when you would just crouch there not knowing where it would drop. 
The silence was absolutely gutwretchingly terrifying.

Then BOOM!!

Apparently, when the engines cut, the V-1 would start a steep incline to the ground, so if you heard it cut off above you, you were safe, But if you heard it cut off a bit aways from you, you were an immediate possible target, They used to pray to hear it stop above them.
She said this would happen while on the buses too, where all the lights on the buses were off so it wouldn't attract attention and then you'd hear the whistling of the V-1 through the air for just a few seconds before it impacted nearby. 

Just going to work each night was a terrifying cat and mouse with death. 
She was just 17 years old.

Just remember that when you are complaining about your life. 
Those who came before us living through hell on earth to give us what we have today.

I can't believe the Germans didn't put two triggers (an upper and a lower) and a "simple" shotgun in both wings. This would have meant that it would no longer have been possible to deflect the V-1 off course by touching or approaching another wing in order to disrupt the airflow. In addition, if the deviation from the gyrocompass was too great, a trigger with a safety timer could have been installed, which would have ignited the device within fractions of a second. On the one hand, this would have been very easy and, on the other hand, would have at least led to the loss of the enemy aircraft.

My mother was in London and the home counties during the war . Said you could hear them going over . As long as you could here the noise you were alright . But if it stopped suddenly, then you had reason to be concerned .
