Thank you for posting this. My mother was within 100yds of a V1 exploding on Croydon aerodrome. She was ok. 40years later she was talking to a disabled neighbour and found out that his disability was caused by the same ‘buzz bomb’.

What’s weird is how abruptly it stops. It doesn’t spoil down like a turbojet.

I think that there were film recorders at the time before tape recorders
They used motion picture film and used the same mechanism as a sound camera but without the camera parts.

I remember my grandad when he said 'you would hear the buzz over the spitfires engine and when you got close and then you herd nothing and your flying next to it and watch it fall and the explosion of the bomb hitting london' and when he was in his house he just droped to the floor and had his hands on his head and prayed the bomb wouldn't hit near him

Elephant rockets give me a similar vibe. Also a very recognisable sound followed by a brief moment of silence before the explosion hits you.

I remember that sound too well despite having been an infant at the time! The terror it instilled in my mother and aunt was contagious!

Literally got jumpscared from that explosion. I can't imagine the people living in that era, experiencing the V1 rocket incidents..

My grandmother grew up in England during WWII, she told me stories about how when she was a schoolgirl in London she and her classmates would hear these bombs during recess. They would play a game where once the engine stopped they would guess how many seconds it would take to hear and explosion. Just goes to show that the human mind will always find ways to distract itself from horrors such as these weapons.
