RISC-V and a look at the VisionFive 2

FYI: I'm calling this a look rather than a review because I'm making this video just to experiment with what RISC-V is like, not whether I would explicitly encourage or discourage people to buy this SBC.

Links:

Contents:
0:00 - Intro (and thank you)
0:42 - RISC-V and instruction sets in general
2:54 - VisionFive 2 Look
6:53 - Outro

Still have no idea how that video blew up, but once again, thank you all so much for 3.5K subs!

I have been using Risc-V SBC for the past 3 years.
I use EMACS, GCC and GDB to program in C and Assembly.

Correction at 4:00 official U-Boot bootloader as firmware does support EFI generic riscv64 targets (Alpine, Arch, Debian, OpenWrt, SuSE, Ubuntu, ...); the custom-modified U-Boot preloaded by StarFive however just doesn't seem to work with anything normal. Updating to offficial U-Boot is simple using an UART serial cable but you will need to build for yourself or locate a build of U-Boot 2024.07 or newer.

Great video. I'm hoping for a RISC-V CPU what can compete with the Snapdragon X Elite

You don't need a wayland version of gnome to install sway at all... You can just install sway, it is completely separate. Also, you don't need to guess whether a GPU driver is in use, just check it using glxgears or glmark or other tools.

Booting from nvme works without any issues, starfive provides special images for sd card, emmc and nvme. You have to ensure, the boot switches are correct. Best performance seemes to be the emmc for some reason, the nvme is not running at full speed. Anyway, it is just a toy for now, as unfortunately the official image is limited to a debian snapshot of 2023/06, and you cannot simply change it to a newer snapshot, so you have a lot of old software with many security issues, i would stay out of the internet with this machine. Hope they will provide a new image soon.

And for some retro gaming, there is a beta of Batocera for the VF2.

there better be a solution to standardized booting for riscv64 in the future. having to find a specific "image" is arcane bullshit that should be got rid of as soon as possible.
hopefully riscv can support uefi or an equivalent.

RISC-V is a competitor to Arm, not AMD/Intel.
