I have a feeling more is at work. I have a feeling that the gas would defuse into the sand somewhat which actually is interesting. When a gas difuses into sand it suspends the sand into a pseudo liquid. That would also explain why the block of dry ice has a sort of water like wake as it slides. Essentially i think it's creating a pseudo fluid that it floats on the surface of. It's like you could put a block on concrete and unless it is perfectly smooth(carpet is another example) it wouldn't slide. It would be less rough than the sand with all the bumps and stuff. The difference is sand is loose and when you pump gas into it it essentially becomes liquid temporary.
