With horses you tell their age by looking at the teeth. So if someone gifts you a horse you shouldn't look to see how old it is. I just explained this one to my wife recently she had no idea. The "Long in the tooth" expression comes from horses also. The longer the teeth the older they are.

Yes, exactly what I thought 😂 I envisioned a pony with a lovely wrapped gift, attached to a necklace so the pony could easily deliver it🙌

OMG yes, I never understood that! Someone had to explain the etymology of this idiom. I was still like "why?"

😂 I can't help but picture the horse's teeth when I hear that expression

I made a conclusion about this phrase. Imagine that someone gifted you a horse. You are an expert at horses, yoyu buy them for horse races. However this gifted horse wasn't so good, because it had reaally bad teeth. So some neurotypical said: ' Don't be so upset, this horse is at least for free!.' a.k.a.'Don't look a gift horse in the mouth.'

In German the saying makes sense, that's why it's actually one that I like! It translates to; don't look into a horses mouth if it was a gift to you; don't search for errors in something you were granted freely. It's fun! All the other sayings tho.. weird. Lol

This saying has been around since people rode horses all the time. Today's equivalent would be someone giving you a car, and then you complain because it's not new :P

It's because you could tell the age of the horse by checking its teeth. So if someone gifted you a horse and you checked its mouth, it would show you as being ungracious for the gift.
I still think that if you're giving someone an old gift, then it's not really a gift, but you unloading your burden on them and social pressuring them to not question it. Oh well.

Anyone else just watching Orion’s mouth in this short?

I haven't heard this one before but I was thinking like a gifted horse, maybe a race horse or something that is really strong and maybe horses think looking at it in the mouth is a show of aggression and the horse would then try to fight you

It’s a stupid saying whichever way to Try and understand it.
Maybe if the troy horse had have been inspected before being let into the village, the soldiers hiding inside would have been discovered.

Oh no, this is actually one that does make sense, if you know the context where it came from: (a) It's a horse that has been gifted (to you), and (2) when buying horses you should usually check their teeth. -> Which you don't have to / shouldn't do with a gift horse. (though I don't know why, because if something is rubbish I don't want it as a gift either, thanks.)

I'm so confused...
I want a gift horse

Am I missing something, or are you?

A gift horse doesn't give gifts; it _is_ a gift.

Now, one looks a horse in the mouth to see how old it is, so the metaphor reminds us not to examine gifts for flaws, because that would be a sign of ingratitude.

But there's another problem with this proverb.

The most famous "gift horse" of all time was made of wood, mounted on wheels, and filled with Greek soldiers led by the wily Odysseus.

So if the Trojans had heeded poor Cassandra just enough to look their gift horse in the mouth, the topless towers of Ilium might have stood.

(But then Aeneas would have had no cause to flee in hot pursuit of the fleeing coast of Italy, and Rome would not have been.)

I think I’m ok with these idioms, but I have no idea what this is supposed to mean? 🤷‍♀️
