From a very expensive warrior’s sword to an enormous pharaoh’s head, here are 10 amazing archaeological discoveries found in the trash!!

10. Elusa Garbage Dump
The city of Elusa, also known as Haluza, thrived 1,500 years ago on the southern edge of the Byzantine Empire, in what is now Israel’s Negev Desert. National Geographic reports Its economy was heavily based on the export of Gaza wine, a white vintage that was shipped across the Mediterranean as far away as France. With 20,000 residents at its peak, the city had churches, public baths, a theater, and craft workshops.

9. Sewer Sword
While working deep inside a sewer in Aalborg, Denmark in February 2019, pipe layer Jannick Vestergaardand and engineer Henning Nøhr spotted a 3.6-foot (112 cm) long double-edged sword lodged into place.

8. Ancient Recycling
Earlier this year, researchers at Pompeii revealed the discovery of a recycling program of sorts that the ancient city carried out. Before the city was buried in volcanic ash in 79 A.D., residents piled their trash outside its northern wall, creating mounds that were often several meters high. These hills of garbage contained bits of ceramic and plaster, which the Pompeians reused in subsequent construction projects.

7. Inca “Reign Of Terror”
Last year, researchers discovered four skulls belonging to malnourished individuals -- three women and a child -- in an ancient trash heap at the ruins of Iglesia Colorada, an Incan village located in the Andes foothills. The garbage dump, which largely consisted of food scraps and discarded pottery, contained no evidence for why it contained four skulls -- no signs of a formal burial or gifts, such as jewelry, for the afterlife.

6. Booted Man
While building London’s “super sewer” in 2018 in a likely futile attempt to combat the city’s human waste problem, which is characterized by too much human waste and nowhere to put it, archaeologists discovered the 500-year-old skeleton of a man wearing thigh-high leather boots. The remains were found along the Thames River, near the Tower of London.

5. Colossal Pharaoh Statue
In 2017, a poor area of Cairo was undergoing some sewer construction when someone spotted something large sticking out of the water. Archaeologists were called in to investigate and it turns out it was a colossal statue!! Measuring around 26 feet tall (7.9 meter), the torso and head were pulled from mud and groundwater by a bulldozer!

4. Why did Greenland’s Vikings Disappear?
Archaeologists have long been puzzled about the mysterious disappearance of Viking settlements in Greenland during the 15th century. Was it pirates, or the Black Plague, or maybe the Vikings’ inability to adapt to the frigid, changing climate they chose to settle in?

3. Chinese Oracle Bones
Over 3,000 years ago, Chinese fortune tellers used the shoulder blades of oxens and the undersides of turtle shells, known as oracle bones, to try predicting the future. They did so by carving symbols into the bone or shell; then, they applied a hot poker to the material, causing it to crack.

2. Roman Trash Mound
Monte Testaccio, one of Ancient Rome’s most famous hills, constitutes the civilization’s largest artificial mound and ancient world’s biggest garbage dump. Measuring nearly a mile (1.6 km) in circumference and around 150 feet (45.7 meters) tall, the site looks like nothing more than a big hill at first glance.

1. Paper Pile
In what Atlas Obscura refers to as “Ancient Egypt’s Most Literate Trash Heap,” a massive garbage pile at a site called Oxyrhynchus near El-Bahnasa is arguably one of the most informative archaeological discoveries ever made. The artifacts here are extremely well-preserved, owing to the arid climate and lack of proximity to any flood plains.

Since you’re into discoveries I’m sure you’ll enjoy tartaria And the fact that giant skeletons have been found as far back as 1905, prior to this it was normal but after this there’s a museum that buys them and then turn “fake” or the skeletons disappear altogether with nothing said about them. They’re hiding a lot of our discoveries or call them fake so we don’t see the holes I history

How does this channel post so often on archeology? I never thought of it as a fast passed topical field I had to keep on top of.

The grove in the sword was to make it lighter. Watch forge in fire to know what it is. Not a blood grove.
