Is Rishi Sunak 'abusing' the UK honours system? | LBC debate

As Prime Minister Rishi Sunak comes under fire for giving a knighthood to a Tory donor who gave the party £5 million, Sangita Myska and investigative journalist Sam Bright discuss whether the honours system should be scrapped entirely.

Mohamed Mansour, a former Egyptian government minister, has been named in an honours list which also includes Oppenheimer director Christopher Nolan, and fellow film producer wife, Emma Thomas.

Labour's Anneliese Dodds says Mr Sunak awarding Mr Mansour a knighthood is "disrespectful" to the office of Prime Minister.

"This is either the arrogant act of an entitled man who’s stopped caring what the public thinks, or the demob-happy self-indulgence of someone who doesn’t expect to be prime minister much longer."

She adds: "Either way, it shows a blatant disrespect for the office he should feel privileged to hold."

Of course he is. It's insulting to even suggest that there is a chance that Sunak isn't corrupt.

Um, yes.. It's always been corrupt. Next question.

How on earth can a man that owes the country millions in tax he tried to avoid be awarded an honour by the country he tried to defraud?

An 'honour' system of knighthood amounts to rot and corruption in itself.

Yes, scrap the whole tarnished corrupt system. Why should we honour people who have done nothing outstanding to serve their community?

YES! It’s needs to be abolished.

And Sam Bright is right, £100 million to fund political parties would save countless billions in corruption.

The “honours” system is a disgrace. More of a “dishonours” system. But no politicians of any party want to reform the shambles that they will later benefit from.

When I was a boy, the longtime head of our local secondary school received an OBE, after a lifetime spent in education.. EVERYONE knew and respected her. Everyone was thrilled when she was honoured, and I still remember the buzz around the area.. it meant something back then.. I think change is long overdue.. the system as it is now should be scrapped..

"They're abusing the honours sytem!!!"
We've had this discussion every year for as long as I can remember, and probably a lot longer than that. The honours system has always existed primarily as a way for those in power to reward their friends and supporters, an actual useful person getting a gong is the exception
