For the longest time I was the tiling window manager guy but I've been using KDE Plasma for quite a while now and people keep suggesting I try out the Polonium tiling extension so here we are.

Can't say I didn't expect this unusable level of jank.

Bismuth was way less janky than polonium is now.

Hopefully they'll implement actual tiling in the next few years.

You should have tried bismuth before KDE 6. It honestly was so good and made me realize how much better tiling was. I may have to move to hyperland or something because my work space has been trash since then

Hey Discord how much CPU would you like to use?

Going to be dead honest, even before its alpha release cosmic's tiling funtion out classes this already. They seem to just need to actually make the rest of the DE around it now, and so far IMO they're coming along quite nicely. Only thing im really dying for in it is touch screen support so I can use it on my minisforum v3, but i know stuff like that's going to be a wait.

I wish the maintaner of bismuth kept it up for plasma 6, because it was light years better than current khronkite and polonomium is in their current state.

Including the "blooper" where you had to restart was golden. 😂

About the thumbnail: me with Forge in GNOME. Those extensions/kwin scripts are awesome!

I'm using Krohnkite and it seems to not have the window drag problem and switches pretty seamlessly. Might be a better option for some people. I believe it's more configurable as well.

Polonium is what pushed me over the edge to daily drive Hyprland

Why would you use KDE on a daily driver, if you want a tiling window manager?

(TBH, I've never had KDE work particularly well. It runs VERY heavy and has VERY dirty out-of-the-box habits for its use of impersistent memory, to the point where it's in the class of GNOME. They use QT a lot in their apps (awesome library btw), and a lot of low hanging fruit spin-boxes and sliders and menu items don't work properly - not to mention the fact that a very well written C-library (which uses xcb - the most solid and streamlined display library in linux) seems to have been used in such a way, that performance and stability are weak points in almost all the apps!)

I use Monocle because monocles are fancy.

No wonder why Polonium sometimes doesn't play well with KDE v6.x if Polonium is using KDE 5.27 features, that can be seen at 12:47.

I better dust off my old Sun keyboard for all those Meta key shenenigans :D

Problem is, Polonomium has a lotta jank to it, and it is beholdent to a third-party wanting to maintain it. System76 is building tiling in directly as a core feature, it won't randomly break or be dropped out of the blue.

I think the meta key thing might be because a lot of KDE distros use ctrl+alt as the base for shortcuts instead of meta
