Ukraine's Kursk incursion: another crisis for Putin | Press Corner

Welcome to Press Corner, our regular Sunday morning review of key events with our colleagues in the media and other experts. On Press Corner we celebrate the privilege of free press by listening to diverse opinions and letting our audience reach their own conclusions. Today we were joined by political analyst Łukasz Warzecha, Editor-in-Chief of Rzeczpospolita Bogusław Chrabota and journalist Aleksandra Karasińska. During our program we discussed the latest developments in the Kursk region, where Ukrainian forces keep advancing deeper into Russian territory, leaving Moscow scrambling for reinforcements and providing a much-needed reprieve to Ukrainian defenders elsewhere on the frontline. After that, we talked about new evidence that has come to light concerning the 2022 sabotage of the Nord Stream pipeline, with a group of six Ukrainians allegedly responsible for the act. Germany issued an arrest warrant for one of the alleged culprits, who previously resided in Poland. Last but not least, we also spoke about the Polish Army which has been a much-discussed issue this week, as Poland celebrated its National Armed Forces Day on Wednesday and Warsaw signed three big military contracts.

I would personally like to thankPoland for all the help they’ve given Ukraine. It means so much to me since my grandfather was Half Ukrainian and half Polish married a full blood German. I would disagree that public opinion does not matter in Russia. And matters less in Ukraine. When Ukrainians invaded Russia, they had no civil resistance none at all! That matters a lot! When the Russians invaded Ukraine, practically every citizen whom could including grandmothers, were poisoning and blowing up the Russians! That public opinion matters! Slava, Ukraine! I think Ukraine knows what they are doing. They have a strategic reason for their attacks on Russian territory. Zelensky is ready to invite Russia to the negotiating table because Ukraine is about to have the upper hand in Ukraine and Russia.

Does Mr. Warzecha not get it? It is impossible to hold elections while Ukraine is fighting a war under martial law. Therefore, Mr. Zelinskyy is still the legitimate president. I know Ukraine has a long way to go, but they are a very young democracy.

I do agree with Ms. Karasinska. Public opinion is a secondary concern to Ukraine's fight against Russia. (Kudos to Poland if indeed they were involved in the Nordstream sabotage). Europe needs to get off of Russian gas. Russia is a criminal aggressor state.

Mr. Chrabota pointed out the importance of timing of the Kursk incursion, marking the significant anniversaries of not only the biggest tank battle of WWII, but also, the sinking of the Kursk submarine. The psychological impact is tremendous. It's a great humiliation for Putin, and a great morale boost for the Ukrainians. Anything that humiliates Putin is a positive thing in my book.

I guess Germany wants its money back on  Nordsteam. Their expected return on investment was kaput. But, it's inappropriate to make public comments and pursue prosecution of Ukrainian suspects during wartime. It sends a very mixed message. (Alas, lawyers will be lawyers).
