Chefs love it when you clean your plate. The few times I've been in a restaurant where the owner did everything - cook, wait on tables and take care of payment - they all smiled when they saw a clean plate. I would sometimes get freebies, too. In Colombia, I was a regular at a restaurant where they knew me as 'la gringa con gafas'. I was always nice to the guys. Whenever I had dinner and they had leftovers from their lunch special, I got a bonus side salad or dessert. In another restaurant when I was in Kuala Lumpur, where I ate only once, the owner saw me scrubbing my plate clean with my naan bread and asked me if I wanted more. Even when they didn't offer me a little extra, their smile was enough. I made their day and it made me happy too.

It's evident that material possessions, no matter how luxurious or extravagant, lose their luster when we lack meaningful connections with others. It's a reminder that the joy of life often comes from the connections we build and the experiences we share with people we care about. I've built a couple busineses. I'm building a Build to Rent construction company.
My first business was service for ultra high net worth clients, I know hundreds of wealthy people and the Rich vs Really Rich is spit on. I sent it to my old employees when it started and they agreed.

Obviously, I’ve never heard of the cloud test until today; however, I have recently seen some accidental success from being more intentional about how I treat people. I met a now close friend of mine 2 years ago because they lived in the same apartment building. My fiancée and I still hang out with her and her roommates at least twice a week. About a month ago, my friend called and said her grandmother, who I had met a couple times, was looking to sell an extra house. They offered it to us for about $30k under appraisal. Her grandmother even said let her know if I can’t get a loan. I never thought I’d get that much benefit from a relationship with a broke college student. My mind is blown

Im current 21, getting into house hacking. What originally interested me and brought me over to this podcast was the fact that Mr. Crown doesn't lose sight of the things that are important to him. I want to be really rich, but also want to be able to make math rock music (jazzy rock) and still be able to play chess. The balance amazes me and makes me want to work towards a life where I can enjoy the things I like without worry about finances

I'm at about 32 minutes in and what you're saying rings true for me. I was often the front desk attendant who was ignored (I often changed jobs). Once, I told the owner of the company that he needed to rest because he was breathing heavily. I was concerned. Since I was just the dumb little receptionist, he made a rude comment and ignored my advice. A few days later, he had a heart attack. I hope he learned his lesson.

And for the sex appeal of things you own.
1. I found out the magic sex appeal magnet is owning a house. Once I had a house, I found myself sitting in the living room with 3 people looking at each other to see who would leave first. The house was a 500sf shack a paid 44, 000 for in a sketchy neighborhood.
2. The things I didn't own. Not buying all the things to impress people is a turn on to the right people.

I'm 53 and worked myself up from nothing. Giving back and mentoring are tough.

When I was a kid, my dad gave one of our rentals over to a poor immigrant at a very good deal, and helped him settle in to our country. One day my mom was being mugged on the street, in braod daylight, and he happend to be driving by, he got off his bike and fought the guy off. While doing so, he exclaimed, "Don't touch this woman, she's a good guy's wife". I only learned of this story like 15 years later, when he was looking for a new place to stay again.

In reality, I'd be perfectly happy with the car and to NOT have anyone ride with me. The very few cars that I own and will own, are for my own satisfaction, because I merely love those cars for their own sake, not for attention nor the compliments. This also applies to the home. If they were still private residences and not museums, and it were within my means to do so, it would be easy for me to live in Marble House in Newport or White Hall on Palm Beach. But for the majority of the population, I see your point.
