Comparing diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) to hyperosmolar hyperglycemic nonketotic syndrome (HHNS) is important for nursing students to understand before exams and the NCLEX.

This video explains the key differences including that DKA occurs due to insulin deficiency, causes metabolic acidosis, manifests with fruity breath, and is treated with insulin administration. In contrast, HHNS is caused by cellular insulin resistance, leads to severe dehydration, causes neurological symptoms like confusion, and is treated with IV fluids and electrolyte replacement. Recognizing the distinguishing clinical features, labs, and treatments is essential to provide proper nursing care for these diabetic emergencies. Reviewing the major differences between DKA vs HHNS will prepare nursing students to correctly answer related questions on exams and the licensure exam.

I successfully passed NCLEX RN at 75 questions in my first attempt.
I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to NURSE MIKE for his wonderful way of teaching.
It is definitely worthwhile for those who will be taking the NCLEX RN Exam.
You will receive all information and knowledge necessary to take the test.

I had two patients in one day with DKA. One had a sugar of 624 and the other was 580. Both were passed out with Kussmaul respirations. It was crazy!!! The next day, someone came in with HHNS. Sugar was 800!! She was awake and aware of everything. It was the weirdest thing to see such a contrast between them.

This tutor is the best I've ever seen.
I never knew that DKT was a problem of type 1 diabetes, I was missing every thing up.
Thank you so much sir, you are one in a million

Hi Mike and team,
I PASSED MY NCLEX FOR THE FIRST TIME. TO GOD BE THE GLORY!! I’m just here to say thank you to you and your team for all the creativity, hard work, and perseverance to keep your content and videos easy to understand and remember, especially your sense of humor. Makes studying so much fun! Highly recommended. Thank you so much 😊

My Type 1 son was 605 at dx in DKA. He had a virus and his doctor gave him an antibiotic and didn't test his BG even when I said "could it be diabetes? My aunt had diabetes as a child." My son went on a science field trip and got sicker and sicker and then when he got back, he looked really thin. He also wet the bed at the age of 11. Finally got the right dx and they saved his life in ICU. Missed Type 1 dx happen ALL the TIME!! Lots of adults called Type 2 even though they have Type 1! Watch for those 20 and 30 yo's. Thank you nurses!

Thanks Nurse Mike! I watched all your videos and Nurse Sarah as well. I took my NCLEX-RN last Thursday (February 22nd, 2024) and found out I've passed this morning! I was watching this video on my way for the NCLEX and had so many questions on HHNS and it really helped me a lot. Thank you and God bless you!!!
