The game's bloody brilliant, what are you smoking lmfao... I put over 1000 hours into it, grinding the hell out of everything I could including the post-end game content. The plot twist at the end was really fkn unexpected too.

I have nothing to say but "your taste is awful" when you open with "this game sucks" for such a great game. Coming from someone who's been hardcore into gaming for over 20 years at this point... And I don't mean in your sense of "oh I have a collection of nerd stuff and I make some content" no... I mean playing games, all day, every day...

Great video. I think it's great you're working through your backlog like this. I was considering buying Star Ocean: The Last Hope, but I don't think the battle system is enough to persuade me

This is a good retrospective. The game didn't age well. The story and characters can be pretty bad and the dub and localization reminds me of games from the 90's and early 2000's. There's a lot of interesting story scenes locked behind missable social links and there's a lot of missables, it's old game design. But the gameplay can be a lot of fun, especially the boss fights. The item creation system is one of the best out of all games, the only game with better item creation is the Atelier series. The post-game and maxing all your equipment and stats is very addicting. I don't know about reviews specifically but I remember a lot of people disliking Star Ocean 4 on its release, even more than Star Ocean 3's second half plot twist.

If you're a real fan you will like it, it sticks to old star Ocean gameplay and it is canonically one of th first games after the earths destruction, it gives a strong bg on the main story .

The main character was called Edge Maverick, THE most "i'm trying hard to be badass" name you can give a JRPG character, i think it was clear how the game would be.

I liked this game a lot. But its garbage. I just like garbage sometimes. But I cant play it anymore because its tough to get through now, it would be significantly better if it had any kind of autosave function so you never have to slog through hours of combat before you can save again. You should have kept going until the part where Edge is screaming "EVERYTHING EVERYTHING EVERYTHING"

Played on Steam 4k60fps was consistent no stutter or drops was solid port.
I really enjoyed my time with it. Not the best JRPG or best Star Ocean but it was good. I also enjoyed Star Ocean 5. I think 4, 5, 6 is considered bad by the community.

As someone who enjoyed their time with SO4, back in the day and again in 2019 as an adult - everything you said is spot on.

I don't hold your opinion that the game sucks but I can definitely see where you are coming from.

Star Ocean games have always been a bit backwards to me. They're absolutely amazing JRPGs for the time - and then they get released a generation late.

SO3 was leagues ahead of any PS1 JRPG, yet it released at the tail end of the PS2. SO4 would have blown the socks off of the sixth generation, yet it came out twice around 2010. They didn't even fix the NG+ to modern standards for the time, which other games were doing! Won't even mention SO5, taking steps backwards in many places.

The Star Ocean world building is pretty decent for what it is, but the series is very much the "read the Flash Notes" of the JRPG world. I struggle to think of any other Tales or FF games it beats out - other than the legendary stinkers of those franchises.

Monster encounters turning unique accessories and Battle trophies are interesting but so mind-numbing.
Sides quest is just a walking simulator. I just did most stuff when I got the way to teleport to towns (which is at the last planet...WTF?)

I mean I loved this SO a lot. All of the sequels after TLH were pretty bad.
