Motor1 Managing Editor Steven Ewing takes a 2017 Toyota Taco Supreme out of it’s natural habitat and onto the beat up pavement of old Detroit to see how well it holds up when it isn’t fording rivers.
As-tested price: $44,670

Here’s the thing about rugged, off-road vehicles: they aren’t always great to use day to day. Sure, knobby tires and lifted suspensions are great for mudding and rock crawling, but that doesn’t make them ideal for highways and parking lots.

I recently tested the 2017 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro off-road in Hawaii, and didn’t touch a single stretch of paved road the entire time. It’s an outstanding truck, with tons of capability. But how does it fare back at home on the streets of Detroit? Do the off-road upgrades ruin the Taco’s inherent goodness as a midsize pickup truck?

That’s what I set out to answer in this week’s Why Buy video. Follow along as I examine the hardcore Tacoma TRD Pro from the viewpoint of a daily driver.

SPECIFICATIONS:
Engine: 3.5-Liter V6
Output: 270 Horsepower / 265 Pound-Feet
Transmission: 6-Speed Automatic
EPA Fuel Economy: 18 City / 23 Highway

This dude really just said that it has a lot of body roll... NO SHIT, ITS A FUCKIN TRUCK. The truck isn't an issue here, the person reviewing the truck is.

The awkward seating position is what makes it look cool and makes it great offroad. Allows for greater ground clearance.

The closest to offroad this host has been is buying mulch at Lowes.

if you want to save 6:56 of your life I'll summarize the whole thing: complain, complain, complain, complain, negative, negative, negative, negative, (final 30 seconds) "I love this truck!"

So does yours hesitate from 0mph when flooring it? My 2016 off-road does. Recall soon? Careful, could cause an accident!

I own a 2016 fully loaded Double Cab TRD 4x4 w/ 0ff-Road package and LOVE IT!

Definitely want the TRD Pro. Love the off-road capabilities it offers. But need a bigger bed. Might go for a full sized truck for that purpose alone. Plus $44K, is a little too rich for me.

Truck was purchased in Michigan brand new . Move down to Dallas, Denton Toyota just said it wasn't enough rust, I had rust all over my frame. ... and they wasn't equipped with the coating process. Good luck to the next owner.
