Disney has finally released its live-action adaptation of Mulan, starring Donnie Yen, Jason Scott Lee, Jet Li, Tzi Ma, Rosalind Chao, and Liu Yifei. After viewing the movie on Disney's streaming service, this is my review.

Mulan keeping her long hair was actually one of the (very) few historically correct changes from the original as Chinese soldiers at that time all kept their hair long.

I can't understand why this remake even exists every single decision they made during production is BAFFLING.

Your review was so well put together and professional. I hope your channel grows! I can’t believe you only have 20+ subs. You deserve so much more!

You should just watch the Chinese live action remake of Mulan instead, it is way better

Excellent analysis! I haven’t seen this one, partly because it just looks terrible, and partly because I have decided to avoid financially supporting the Disney behemoth to the best of my ability (though it’s honestly pretty much impossible to avoid because of aforementioned “behemoth” status), and I would rather just not get to see things than pirate them. It’s so weird to try and think about Disney and the “kind of movies” that they make, because they’re just such a sprawling, difficult to pin down corporate organism. Some of their content, when I have caught it, is still gorgeous, rich, funny, thoughtful and original. But so much of what they do has a sickly, anemic lack of heart or spark. And it’s so hard to know whether some of the more insidious messaging stems from active malevolence or merely many small, semi-intentional corporate missteps. Did Mulan’s story degenerate from “you can achieve success within a world that wasn’t created for you through a combination of relying on your own innate strengths, learning to improve where you start out weak, and building strong relationships” to “I guess you just have to be a superhero, so screw you if you’re not” BY DESIGN, or was it just unforgivable storytelling sloppiness? So many fascinating questions!

You said out loud every single critique I have been grumbling about in my head since watching it.
In contrast I did enjoy Aladdin much more then Mulan.
Anther thing I hated that you didn't mention was the whole chi thing. Part of what made Mulan so awesome was she was a normal woman that had a strong character and a strong drive to protect the ones she loved. She was able to accomplish everything she did because of her character. But in this adaptation she's special cause she was born with extra chi? Totally detracts from her character.
Disney had been cashing in on the momentum of the cartoons and poorly delivering the core meassges.
Same thing with lion king. The climax of the central theme convo with the monkey... "The past can hurt, but you can either learn from it or run from it "... Totally cut. Grrrr
Anyway rant over. Miss ya bud!

*Niki Caro*: Jason, I Want You To Invent A Disney Remake, With Our Live Action Mulan. AND I Wanted Grandmother Fa, Li Shang, And Mushu To Be Removed.
*Producer*: But Niki, Removing All The Three Characters Is Gonna Make The Movie Itself Look Absolutely Boring! And Not To Mention, Nobody Even Cared About The Evil Witch Character Named ‘Xianniang’ When They Saw Her For The First Time!
*Niki Caro*: I Don’t Give A Pop! You Need To Include As Many As Possible To Artificially Inflate The Price. How Else Are They Gonna Buy Our Movie For Under 30 Bucks On Disney+?
*Producer*: Um...
*Niki Caro*: And Who Cares About Hua Mulan Having Superpowers? You Know That No Matter What We Do, And We Are Still Gonna Get Those Sales From Our Brainwashed Walt Disney Fans!
*Producerg: WoW Niki, I Have Never Thought Of That In My Life That Before, You Are So Smart!
*Both*: (Laughs Together)
