Well I wasn't going to comment, but just because there were so many negative comments, I'm going to throw my 2 cents in.
I happened to take huge value out of this video. Why? I am sitting here, pulling my hair out, about to invest in a platform. Last night I was all sown up to buy the R6 this morning until I watched a LOT of reviews and made a few ph calls...

The only reason I was going to get the R6, was because I had used it on other projects. There is an absolute sea of information out there on cameras, so I didn't even know what else was comparable and to be honest, I'm super busy and didn't have the time to trawl through info.
I then find out the A7Siii is the beast of them all. So naturally I gravitate to it... I then run the numbers on the Body, 3 lenses, a rig, spare batteries, cards, bag, tripod, lights etc and it's beginning to look just shy of a $10k experience. Yikes.

The fall back plan becomes the A7iii. Half the price, still a hell of a camera and leaves money for all the other things needed to make up a kit.

This video essentially summed up my last 5 days perfectly. It even mentioned "what you should do if you have NO gear" which is what I was hoping he would cover.... and low and behold, he recommended the Sony system and the A7iii. Which is where I had arrived myself anyway. I was all but there, but this video put the nail in for me.

So maybe you are watching this video like "yah, no shit dude", but this video isn't for all you millionaire film makers...

It was literally the exact perspective and opinion I was looking for and addressed the exact situation I found myself in.

Great video. 5 Stars from me.

So it’s like buying a new house and being surprised you have to move your belongings.

That was an interesting video to watch and see your perspective. I have both the A7S III and R5 and rate both very highly. Whilst the R5 has a better image in the 8K and 4K HQ setting, those are the modes which can cause overheating, although I've only had this happen on long clips like interviews. The bog standard mode is fine, but it suffers badly in comparison to the other two modes. This is the mode you need to use if there is overheating but more importantly this is what the 4K looks like in anything over 30p so that is a real shame.

The Sony A7SIII had a uniform excellent 4K across all resolutions, whilst not as detailed as the 8K and oversampled 4K HQ of the R5, it's still great and much better than the line skipped standard R5 4K.

By far, the biggest negatives for me with the R5 is workflow. It sucks. If you shoot in All-I C-Log every edit system I have cannot cope with it, apart from my little MacBook Pro 13" with the m1 chip but that means using FCP X which is not my NLE of choice, including what it looks like you use, Resolve. Everything I shoot on that camera needs transcoding and that is time, and as you said "time is money".

The A7S III in it's XAVC-S-I mode needs no transcoding, its a fabulous codec and a joy to work with. The bit rates are all manageable and similar to ProRes 422. The 120p of the R5 is crazy big, it makes no sense. I also like that I can choose to shoot 4k 120p with audio, although not in XAVC S-I

Your main gripe in this video felt a little strange to me, you regretted diving into the A7SIII because of the time it cost you to get it all set up, buy the lenses etc? How long did it take? It's also obviously not the camera's fault. Yes it's a pain that there isn't a better EF to E adaptor, although if you have Sigma glass their MC-11 adaptor makes them like native E mount glass with excellent AF.

So basically this video felt like two different subjects that didn't really gel, time management and choosing your camera system. Both are very worth subjects and worth their own videos :)

Anyway, thanks for the video and interesting opinion. Subbed :)

P.S. A big no to the Peter McKinnon opening music!

Uhhhh...why not RENT the a7S III and a few lenses to see if you WANT to switch? Doesn't make sense to purchase just to THINK about switching...or am I off base here...?

I switched 2 months ago. I regret nothing.

How can you fail to realise you’d need to buy new lenses? A beginner mistake surely.

I switched from canon to the a7iii. It took me only an hour to learn it. I don’t know why people say it takes so long to learn a new system. I will never go back to canon. Sony just seems to be ahead with technology.

When you're still worried about the gear instead of the content, composition, output. Then you're still in the honeymoon phase of photography/videography. You take what you have, do your best and don't regret a decision whether that be on gear or any forks in a production. Regret will only reinforce uncertainty on future decisions. Own it. Your production requirements will dictate the gear, not the other way.

I shot beautiful footage with my a6400 and YouTube made me feel like I had to get the a7siii. So I did. And you know what, my old clients didn’t see a damn difference. I shoot IG video for models and businesses and charge about $600-1200 and I had to ask myself one question. Did my new camera make my services go up 🆙? *Hell naw* I still charge the same price. So stick with what you got and don’t let gear affect marketing yourself.

I started taking photography seriously about 5 or so yrs ago. Went from a Canon T4i, to my first full frame, the 6D. 2 and a half yrs ago, I switched to an A7III. Sold my camera body for an excellent price within 2 days, and all my lenses ( 4 in total ), within a month, as well for a great price. I've never looked back, or had any regrets. All camera systems are incredible, and each come with pluses and minuses. Nobody should regret what they own. The user has more influence on pictures/videos, than any camera anyway. I've seen people make far better videos, and take way better photos with a $500 camera than people with very expensive gear.

I’m a hobbyist photographer who travels often enough. I sold my Nikon gear 5 years ago and want to get back into it. I’ve been researching on whether to go Canon or Sony. I’m leaning to Canon because I like the ergonomics and ease of use. I don’t plan to go professional and I don’t have a strong negative opinion on the RF-EF adapters.

Body budget is around $1300 so that puts me around the R8 or A7III. There’s a lot of Canon/Sony switchers on YouTube but it feels like an iPhone vs Android for me.

I’m looking to only get 4 lenses on either system:
50mm
85mm
70-200mm
24-70mm
Optional 18-35mm.

Well, I just switched from Canon to Sony. And the first 30 mins of my research had already pointed me to the issues of Canon EF lenses focusing support over adapter. From the release of a7iii, this issue has been pretty out there, bruh. Could have rented it like you did with other bodies to test it out first before dropping 5 grand on it.

For me though, it's definitely worth it since I bought mostly Sigma EF lenses and support over MC11 has been pretty dang good.. real time tracking and autofocus works fine for pic and vid..

You are right about not letting gear affects what's more important at the end though.. ;) cheers.

This is why I'm carefully considering my first camera. It's not so much the brand of camera, but the investment in lenses. I'm waiting for the Sony A7 siv to come out. Yes it's more than I need to start but it will last me years and I can grow into it.

10 years in the corp video business. I still found this video very informative / insightful. Thanks for sharing. I’m sooo bloody guilty of gear hunting.
