2023 MG4 SE Long Range Review | Honest Car Review | MG4 EV

Welcome to my very honest review of one of the most talked about cars in recent times, the MG4. The MG4 EV is MG's answer to many, more expensive, rivals; no more so than the VW ID.3 aginst which it goes head to head.

Is the MG4 the best electric car for the money on the market today? does the MG4 live up to the hype?

Please let me know your thoughts about the MG4, is it the best value EV to date? what are your thoughts on the range issue?

I'm Jim Starling, please watch my other car reviews, always honest; always unbiased.

It's my fourth EV. Did over 5k miles already. It's a great looking, practical, great spec and decent range and value for money family car 🚗

Great review Jim, I ordered my MG4 Trophy in White in October after a test drive, it’s so nice to drive. I was told my car is being delivered today, so should be ready for collection next week or the week after at the lates.

Winter temperatures, using the heater and motorway speed is the trifecta of challenges for an EV. It’s why most now have heated seats, heated steering wheels as it’s far more energy efficient over heating the air (no engine to do that for you). In the summer, it’ll be the other way around - though similar on the motorway though regardless of temperature. Thanks Jim.

Lovly review, points to considder:
1. UK versions do not have heatpump, in Norway our only version (Luxury/Trophy) does have. That helps range vise in the cold.
2. SE do not have heated steering wheel or heated seats, that's only in the Trophy (In Norway we only got Thropy or Luxury as it's called her). One can save a lot energy using heated steering wheel and seats, and keep the coupe heater at a lower setting (top tip is to preheat the coupe while atatched to the grid).
This is the name of the game to keep the range up in the cold for EVs.
3. In our petrol/diesel cars we can use a lot of energy and we only notice we have to fil up more often, an EV make our energy consumtion very obvius. Thats the real difference.

Btw. Waiting for delivery of our MG4 Luxury her in Norway.

Another great honest review. A car is a very personal choice, but what the MG4 has done is extend the EV option to so many more people.

Great honest review. I own a 19 reg Renault Zoe and experience the same range problems in winter although my full charge mileage readout reflects this dynamically after every charge, it tells me I'm getting around 120 miles at the moment and in the summer it increases to around 185 miles, maybe the mg4 needs a software update to do the same with its readouts. I'm holding out for the Mg4 sport later this year which sounds promising!

This is the one they're all talking about. Not only will the MG4 provide many who would like to move to an EV, the chance to do so, the MG4 may also serve as a marker to the other brands, and force them to be at least a little more if that happens, we all win. Nice one Jim. MG have also smartened their MG5 up nicely too in the new version, which is useful, because it's the *only* fully electric estate car on sale.

Pickup my MG4 SE Long range on Friday. It replaced the Zoe I had for the last 2.5 years. The Zoe suffered miserably in the winter months with range, especially if you ran the heater constantly, but in the Summer months got close to it's claimed range if you drove it like Church on Sunday. I expect similar from the MG4 due to the battery chemistry.

I have long term owner experience of two EVs, a Hyundai Ioniq and a Peugeot e208. Both are affected by cold weather and driving style, but the Hyundai is affected much less, and you can rely on the range it predicts you will get to within 10 miles, in summer I'm getting just over 200 miles of range and in the winter more like 175 miles which is plenty for everyday use. As you can rely on the quoted range it's also easy to plan appropriate charging stops on long journeys, so I've never suffered range anxiety in this car. The Peugeot is a different matter. I like the car a lot and as a "city car" it’s fantastic but I don't like taking it on long journeys. When fully charged it always shows a range of 187 miles, but in sub-zero temperatures you can watch the range disappear at almost 2 for 1 proportions especially if you're driving on faster roads. Having said that the car serves my needs well and I'm happy with it. Not all EVs are the same, that's all I'm saying.

Great review! Unlike most other reviews it’s refreshing to hear about it being actually fun to drive! Everyone else seems to have forgotten that driving dynamics and fun are also important to those of us in this sort of market too!
I’m looking at one as part of the motability scheme due to my poor health, there’s not much interesting to us petrol heads on there but a well balanced all ev gives something new to the mix! The only other car I could get excited about on the scheme is the Alfa Romeo Tonale and that’s an suv so already loses drivers appeal (I currently have a 4.4 V8 BMW 545i)
Thanks for the great review, you might have swayed me towards the geek side over the stylish Alfa!

Cheers Jim, another good review from you here. Missed a few bits but, over all very good. I have a problem with the looks of this car, as I can't decide if I like it, or not. Other than looks I believe that MG have pretty much nailed it. Spec, handling, price, all on point. My Mrs. is about to order a Niro as her next company car, which comes in at a smidge over £43k, that's £11k more than the Trophy version of the MG. That's a lot of money for for what is in effect the same car ability wise. But when you take into account the BIK rate on EV's it works out only a couple of hundred quid more . In conclusion, if I was buying an EV with my own hard earned cash, There would be an MG on my drive. As a company car, I'll go get the best I'm allowed.

The car is automatically set to 'intelligent' battery heating (7kW!) when its cold. Turn it off (in the menus) because it's not necessary unless you want fast high speed charging. I didn't find this out for the first several weeks of ownership and was disappointed with range. Now it's much much better.

I took delivery of one the week before Christmas the standard range version. During the cold spell I calculated a range of about 135 miles after a longish run out. Viewing other Youtubers the summer range should give 180 miles, I hope. WLTP 218 miles hmmmm. My sons now five year old 30 kWh Soul still gives 100 plus winter miles probably due to Kia build and a heat pump. The car does drive brilliantly but has some early issues of people getting locked in their car, unable to escape and a gearbox oil leak. I do like the car but it is dependent on a few things improving come the summer months. Nice video by the way.

My KIa E-Niro cruising on the motorway at 65 to 70mph with the heater on does about 3.5 miles/Kw. The WLTP is 281 miles in the summer and I regularly get 4.2 miles/Kw, so very similar to the MG4..

Nice review, many thanks. Had SE LR since 1st October. Range is a lot less than advertised (at the moment). I am getting 220-230 ATM. I am very keen to see what it gets in the summer.

Right star button set for AC and you can use the right toggle to easily adjust the temperature and fan speed (or press the toggle to set to Auto). 😉

Agree re. access to drive mode/regen ... but even Normal mode works fine in frosty/icy conditions

Re. range - check that battery heating isn't turned on. My SE SR (50.8kWh usable) can give as low as 130 miles range when temps are negative.

Hi again Jim you know what, I love you and your channel and what you do on it, and this latest review you have done is the best review I have seen yet on the MG4 by a mile every word in it is very true, my wife’s had an SE standard range car for around 2 mouths now and she likes it and for what she does in it short journeys shopping trips etc its fine, we have been EV owners now for a couple of years with the MG5 so know only to well the ups and downs of owning one, I am also a member of the MGEVs owners forum and appear on there podcast sometimes so I do know and have learned quite a lot about all the tricks of driving EVs
But Jim there are several issues with the MG4 many of them silly little things which can be very annoying to some and if you spend a little of your time reading some of the forum you will see for yourself some of the owners of these cars have had no end of problems trying to get some MG dealers to except the issues the car has and MG motors also refused to listen to some of the issues as well.
You comment about the range of this car yeh from experience I can tell you it is poor very poor in fact I will be very surprised if it ever hits the 218 mile range it is said to do in fact several owners have said how poor it can be at one point our car was doing 2 mile per KW so a range as low as 100 miles I’m sure that will improve once temperatures improve but 218 I don’t see it.
It is a great drive it goes around corners like it’s on rails and irons out everything you can throw at it on most surfaces
You said in you video it’s a nice car and I have them same words as well but it could be a Great car if MG motors would listen to the owners but they don’t and won’t. I do feel sorry for some of the dealers to be honest they have been left to sort out problem on this car that should never have been there the oil leaks being one.
The lack of any lighting in the rear and no grab handles to assist you getting in and out with sills that are so wide it is really hard for shorter people having to go into the screen to change many settings if you need to is not only poor but is dangerous when on the move.
I could say a lot more but Im sure you have heard enough thank you for you time and the video and keep them coming yours are the very best in my honest opinion. Truthful or the point with no holds barred thank you.

In the recent cold weather, I've lost at least 30 miles of range with the heating on. The higher the fan speed and heat, the more range is lost. Given that these temperatures are experienced pretty rarely throughout the year, I'm not overly concerned about this, it is expected. It just means that if doing a long journey a little more planning with charging stops might be needed, but given that most of my driving is within a 50-mile radius it isn't a problem for me.
