The so called One China policy is just an obsolete piece of paper.
Taiwan is a free & independent country. And most of all the Taiwanese people consider themselves to be free & independent.

Why doesn't Taiwan lean towards China but instead leans towards America? Aren't you all from the same race??

After WWII, there were several hundred thousands of Japanese who stayed in Taiwan. Hence, in the current population of Taiwan, there will be several millions of these people with Japanese roots and they could be the ones who will try to exert independence for Taiwan. Understandably, Japan has in recent years tried to show support for Taiwan independence.
So, what China is expected to do? They will defend their sovereignty and would not agree for Taiwan to be independent. And all these years, the issue of Taiwan's independence has been a red line for China. And China may be prepared for war if any country tries to incite Taiwanese to declare independence.
Japan may think that with the support of USA, they can now support their Japanese descendents in Taiwan to declare independence. They will pay dearly in case of open conflict with China. The military bases of USA in Japan will be primary targets for sure and China will make sure Japan pays for blood debt for the many people massacred in Nanking and elsewhere in China during WWII.
