you can also install google chrome apps from the chrome store DIRECTLY onto chromium edge, so no reason to even install google chrome anymore.

How good is it for developers to poke around in web dev tools? I keep using Chrome because it gives me a lot of options in this regard, but I would love nothing more than not having to depend on Google a single minute longer.

You can enable GPU rendering in Chrome in chrome://flags and then enable "override software rendering list". In Edge the same in edge://flags, enjoy! By default GPU Rendering only is enabled on Chromebooks but can be enabled even on Android. I have same amount of CPU and GPU usage in task manager when playing an 8k 60 fps video on youtube with this settings. But Edge uses 27 percent less RAM :)

Still sticking with Firefox and Brave. Vivaldi is a good choice for people that want full customization and liked Opera.

So my question. Is it apples to apples? Seems like the edge isn't signed into an account or have any applications installed. No ad block installed on the new edge.

Your score isn't right for Html5test, you should use a fresh profile.. I get 535 on Chrome 79. Perhaps you should retest considering..

Ok, the higher performance comes from GPU rendering feature of the Edge browser probably. Open the task manager and run Google Chrome and Edge Chromium side by side. You should be able to see Microsoft Edge using a GPU engine while Google Chrome only using the CPU. Also the amount of RAM used by Edge is about 70-80% of what Google Chrome uses when browsing similar webpages.

If you don’t have a capable GPU, Microsoft Edge Chromium won’t feel much smoother than Google Chrome.

There are also still some compatibility issues with the Edge browser too.

Edge (chromium) is a lot better than Chrome, easier menu, looks better and less resources hungry. I would advice the switch from chrome to edge. Google are even borrowing features from the new Edge already!

I switched from chrome to the new chromium edge browser and i don't think i'll be switching back. I had issues on chrome playing youtube videos with 60fps but with the new edge browser everything works fine. I also love the interface of the new edge

I have issues with the new edge when it comes to streaming video. When a scene changes (especially while watching a movie on Netflix), it goes a bit glitchy for a split second, flipping between the old scene and new scene. I've gone back to Chrome for now until they address this.
