I was in Barcelona recently. All of the menus are in Català. I have French and Castilian, so it very easy to grasp the written word, newspapers, and the TV helps... wonderful city! Easier than unscrambling Italian. PS part of the old town is called El Gotic ...

It's like listening to Spanglish, except instead of Spanish and English, it's Catalan and German. Deutschalan.
I first learnt Spanish from my mom's coworker when I was 5, except she was from Catalonia and ended up teaching me a hybrid Spanish-Catalan. It seems to mostly be mutually comprehensible, but every so often, I'll pull out a word or phrase while speaking Spanish and native speakers will give me funny looks. I will never feel comfortable saying la mujer, for me it will always be la dona.
