Spring Routines: Living Off-Grid in the Australian Wilderness

In the Australian rainforest, our spring routine includes swimming, caring for animals and regenerative farm work. Living off-grid in the wilderness can be hard work, and the dry spring weather also brings the threat of bushfires. So, we clear patches of weeds and work on regenerating up in the wild forest.

We live and farm on the land of the Arakwal and Minjungbal people of the Bundjalung Nation and these practices of regenerative living, agriculture and permaculture owe their roots and theories to Indigenous knowledge — they have been practiced by Indigenous People around the world for so many years. We acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the Country we live on, and recognise their continuing connection to the land and waters. We thank them for protecting this rainforest and its ecosystems since time immemorial.

I'm so happy you grew up here. This is life. What we get closer to the city is some sort of watered down version where if you want to experience nature you can walk to a sparse park or drive for an hour in traffic and join the queue to see the nature.

I lived in the Sunshine Coast hinterland as a child with my parents and siblings. When I finished my high school years, I moved to the city to attend University and my whole life changed then into a lifestyle that took me into major cities and around the world. I am an old bloke now and have retired into a small township back near the Sunshine Coast where I spent my childhood. Things have changed here though and ai miss the simpler rural life. The coolest thing is the relationships you ladies have with all your animal companions. I know that in quiet moments when you’re making eye contact with any of those beautiful creatures that there is definitely a communication happening between two hearts. It’s beautiful !
