The scriptwriter makes a simple but very important point.
When the boys were tending to the animals it was all very raw and messy with sheep dung and harsh grime everywhere.
Nature is like that; she's chaotic, grubby and contradictory. Thus when the boys get all up close and physical with each other, it doesn't look remotely un-natural or out of place.
