Set in the remote farming country of North Yorkshire, Francis Lee's quietly assured feature debut focuses on Johnny (Josh O'Connor), who numbs the frustration of his lonely existence on his family's farm with nightly binge-drinking at the local pub and casual sex. When a handsome Romanian migrant worker (Alec Secareanu) arrives to take up temporary work on the farm, Johnny suddenly finds himself having to deal with emotions he has never felt before. As the two begin working closely together during lambing season, an intense relationship starts to form, one which could change Johnny's life forever.

It's wrong to compare this film to 'Brokeback Mountain'! The only thing the two have in common is that they are about two men who find love together. Beyond that, the scope of 'God's Own Country' is limitless, thanks to the brilliance of the two men who play the main roles. I find myself astounded at the rawness and candour of their work. The tension between them shoots out of the screen and hits you in the heart! They are dirty and passionate and tender and ugly and selfish and beautiful all at once. The way Gheorghe teaches Johnny to open himself is just... just... there are no words! The scene near the end is so achingly tender, you just want to reach in and be part of it. I feel so lucky to have been able to see this film and, particularly, these two men in the roles.

This homosexual love story is the greatest, most moving and powerful I've ever seen. I loved Brokeback Mountain, but this film is so hopeful, so beautiful. Brokeback left me devastated, not this film. Although this film too is filled with struggle and hardship, the love, this man-to-man love, is the salvation of the story. This one man's love for the other man saved that man. In Brokeback the love left both men alone and almost numb with pain.
