I did commercial voiceover for years, and we were always directed to physically perform the part even though we couldn't be seen. It makes a huge difference on vocal performance.

The “smile” is a posture used in classical opera. It lifts the soft pallet and opens the air passage to max diameter. Your first posture (A) was constricting your air passage by forcing it into the shape of a bell (wide in the throat, narrow in the mouth). Your smile posture (B) opened the air passage into the unrestricted shape of a megaphone — which, ironically, caused it to ring clear like a bell. Best breakdown of the physiology of the vocal smile is by Michael Trimble, who has dozens of top-shelf YouTube videos on the classical vocal methods.
Another great lesson, Bobby. Thanks!

Also works the other way - when a line is too harsh, too sibilant (or sad song), reduce mouth opening to get softer vibe.

This is called "vocal placement". You can tell your singer to sing with a forward placement and they will know what to do. Great videos Doc!

This is why I have "that face" in most of the thumbnails on my page! LOL! A lot to this! Glad to see it on your channel!

Bobby with the gold as always!!! Not only does it sound “happier” but it is a lot clearer sounding 🤘

I learned this technique on my own when my vocals were dull and I couldn't get clear enunciation on the track. I sang it with a smile and like you said everything opened up and I got my vocal take. Thanks for passing this trick on!

Thanks Bobby that’s a great tip! A stylistic approach to the same vocal which can make it pop more without using a plugin or software assistance!

many years ago I was singing in a lounge act and this guy who later displayed his excellent vocal talent told me to open up my mouth more when I sing.. and sure enough it helps.. a lot.. thanks for reminding me of this!

funny . I just finished recording a singer with a lot of pop and attacks. I asked him to smile and finished the problems :) smiling softens the transistors and the dynamics. Simple solutions are often the most effective. for your song a twelve string instead of synths and tom petty would have approved:)Bravo.Merci pour vos vidéo .

My mother has been a Sweet Adelines barbershop member for all my life. I remember as a kid sitting in on some coaching sessions. I remember them saying to make sure to smile when singing. It's a tiny detail that makes a difference and nobody thinks about it. However it's not for every song.

This is mf !brilliant!
I can see why people wouldn’t think it is a big deal, but there’s an unobtainable mesh that comes with that B take
I consider this groundbreaking and you’re right Doc, it does seem obvious in retrospect. Genius. Thank you

And it oddly sits in track better! All I knew before you explained, was 2 was sitting better. I couldn’t figure out why it was brighter if we’re not paying attention to any low cut or eq! Thanks doc!

Great tip...I also love your brother Dan's guitar playing. He is a beast. One of my hero's from the 80's and beyond

Oh TOTALLY! YES... I first noticed this with Stevie Wonder.
OMG! Ha! And you don't need perfect incisors to achieve this :)
Thanks for the reminder!
