The recent flooding in China has been severe. Due to the heavy rains in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River, the water level in the Three Gorges Reservoir has risen further. Under these circumstances, the Three Gorges Dam had to open 11 holes from July 10 to 15th to release flood water, which led to the disaster in the middle and lower reaches of the Three Gorges becoming even more severe. Look at the situation in Sichuan Province, upstream of the Three Gorges Dam:

Renowned and extremely intelligent engineers warned the CCP that building such a huge dam would cause ecological problems, landslides and a possible catastrophe disaster. They were condemned, isolated and a number disappeared. So much for the CCP’s reasoning and concern for their own people.

The worst of this is when all the toxic waste and plastic end up in the West Philippines Sea.

I remember reading about the Three Gorges Dam in National Geographic years ago. The article was very flattering and stated it was going to save all these villages from flooding. Looks like that was a little optimistic.

Thank you for including the maps! They help keep it straight. Cheers.

The floods will not end at Nanjing. This is because much of the water will remain in the Yangtze River drainage basin, will flow back into the river and the flood will continue to Shanghai where it enters the East China Sea.

Even at max discharge there is still surplus intake. It's a losing battle and millions are paying for the governments mismanagement

They missed the most important point about most of these dams. That is the generation of electricity. The dam officials have electricity quotas to be achieved or else penalties ensue. Maximum power generation occurs when the dams are almost full and continuous electricity can be generated. If flood control was prioritized then less electricity generation would be the result. This is especially true of the Three Gorges Dam with it's huge capacity to generate electricity. It's all about priorities.

Getting these photos and information is nearly impossible. The Chinese people have been through so much horror.

I have to wonder if the Tofu Dreg Dam will be able to close all those gates successfully. The concrete looks crumbly, and all that water could scour a channel in the concrete. If that happens, then the channel will get bigger and bigger, leading to a dam failure.

It breaks my heart to see such devastation for the Chinese people again and again. How do they continue without government support ? All their problems are caused by this same government. Your anger must be palpable. I feel your pain here in Australia 🇦🇺

Clearly the dam is used for profit not for flood prevention. What are the lives of a few thousand people per year compared to an extra precious yuan?

There are three reasons to have a dam,
1 - Water Supply - store water to drink, irrigation, or industry
2 - Hydroelectric Power Generation - use the water to generate power.
3 - Flood Control - store water to prevent floods.

The three Gorges dam was built to only generate hydroelectric power. Only a set amount of water is needed to generate hydroelectric power, so any extra water will be discharged every year,

Can you imagine how many people it must happen to in China that one day your loved one just doesn’t come home? Or loved ones? And maybe you just never even find out why, just one day they’re there and the next they’re gone. I can’t imagine the heartbreak the Chinese people have endured.

A horrible situation for those affected. They have no recourse but to suffer.
