This happened to me on our flight to our cousins 😭. There were at least 3 planes that we tried to get in that had maintenance issues, and we eventually had a 10 hour delay. They did pay for a hotel though, and food. In the morning we did get in a plane but it also had a minor maintenance issue, but they said it would only take a few minutes, which it did. We eventually got to our cousins :). We also had no problems on the flight back :D.

PHL airport worker here for AA. This is very common. The delay falls on us then we have to compensate for customers loss. If we didn’t do this no one would ever wanna fly American. Although if it’s a weather issue like snow or fog, doesn’t make it Americans fault so you gotta get your own accommodation.

This is no secret so if you'd rather stay another night in a hotel and fly the next day then go for it for controllable delays. But if you want to get home the same day but delayed, then stay with your own flight. Also, Addison, learn to pronounce CARRIAGE correctly.
