I've been using a wide stubby screwdriver. Now I'm going to make one like yours. Thank you for the inspiration.

About 60 years ago, an old carpenter told me his grandfather told him the secret of the plane screw.
I would always ask him what's the secret, and he would say he would tell me once I had finished my apprenticeship.
Eventually, the day came and my apprenticeship was finished.
Of course by this time I had forgotten all about the plane screw secret, and I moved on to work for myself and lost touch with my mentor.
Of course, I had just used an ordinary flat blade screwdriver whenever I needed to remove the Chip Breaker from the blade.
Time passed and eventually my business expanded, so I thought I needed my own apprentice, which would help my business, and also pass on all the skills I had gained over the years .
After quite a few interviews, I eventually picked a nice young lady, who seemed really enthusiastic, and was really interested in carpentry.
The first year of her apprenticeship, was just getting her into getting familiar with basic tools, and some of the basics of the trade.
But as time passed, and she got more experienced, and of course the questions got more and more in depth, regarding things like " what's this for, and why does that look like that.. All the usual questions people have as they get more into any trade.
So, one day, I asked her to take apart a plane, so she could sharpen the blade, and she gets to the part where you undo the screw.
I had a special screwdriver that I had ground specifically for this job, and handing it to her, the conversation I had with my old mentor popped into my head.
Later that evening, I thought about this and made the decision to try to contact him and remind him of our conversation.
Well, after some phone calls I was able to speak to him again, and made arrangements for us to get together and talk over how things were going for both of us.
We arranged to meet, and it was really nice to get together after quite a long time.
I went over to his house, and met his lovely wife, and we had a really nice meal.
After the meal he took me into his workshop, and showed me all his beautiful old woodworking tools, lovely chisels, saws, all his really beautiful cabinets, and of course his collection of hand planes.
This was my chance, and I brought up the subject of the chip Breaker screw.
At first he pretended not to understand, but eventually he put his hand on his chin and said, " Oh yes, ....the secret ".
He then said. " Follow me ", and we went through a secret door in his workshop, .
Inside he said I must never tell anyone about his room, not even his wife new of it.
By this time my heart was heating quite fast as I was wondering what am I about to see.
He goes over to a beautiful hand made cabinet, and unlocks it, opens the door and brings out a small box, which he hands to me, and tells me to open it when I get home.
We return to his wife and after a drink we all say goodnight to each other and wave goodbye.
I couldn't wait to get home to open this box, but thought I will leave it until the next day to find out.
I got up the next day, went to work forgetting about the box, until I got home.
I waited until my children had been put to bed, and told my wife about the screw story, and of course she was anxious as I was to find out the secret.
I pored both of us a large whiskey, and we sat down at the dining table with the box in front of us.
Of course this wasn't an ordinary box, it was a puzzle box, which wasn't a surprise to me.
But eventually after about an hour, I had worked out how to gain entry into the secret compartment.
Inside was a small piece of paper, folded and sealed with wax.
Delicately, I undone the folds, and in large calligraphic writing, were the words..

..
.
.

.
. " Hidden in PLANE Sight ".😢

The old penny as a screwdriver trick is my go-to for larger flathead screws.

my grandpa doesn’t use many hand tools but i’m assuming he’d use his pocket knife like he does for everything else. screw need to come out? pocket knife. splinter in your hand? pocket knife. apple need peeled? pocket knife. ever wash the pocket knife? hell no

Just came to comment that this is the first time outside of my museum volunteering that I've heard "Neanderthal" said with a silent "H". Hats off!

Pretty soon after getting some planes I made a tool for the screw kinda like yours but more doorknobby like the lee valley one (a lathe helps lol). Just a strip of steel from the hardware store, a knob and a sleeve of copper pipe to keep it around the screw. works great

Haha, I’m pointing at you Rex! I would have to agree with Rex on this if the lever cap fits correctly then use it carefully.

I bought the Lie Nielsen chipbreaker screw driver because I was in their showroom and had an extra $30 😀

Yes. I go to sleep every night pondering on the intricacies of taking a screw out.

I use the cap iron. Undamaged irons and screws after a half century. My dad did the same. As did his dad. Many of my tools were inherited - they're all fine.

I love the look of the solid metal and wood. Never needed a fancy screwdriver, gotta have at least 10 cheapos around the house as nothing ever stays put and something always ends up missing 😅

45 years as builder here in New Zealand and still using hand tools in retirement. I have always used the part off the place to remove the screw, and have taught many young guys the same thing. It is natural.

Most use the lever cap because we don’t want to spend $25-30 for a one trick pony! That being said why don’t you make a video of this tool for us! You are truly a Gem at making things and sharing! Always great videos! Thanks again 😊

Made a short stubby one from a piece of mower blade and a nice bit of laburnum. BTW you can improve a mishandled screw by putting the threaded end in an aluminium or brass padded vise and carefully peening the slot back in shape with a small hammer. Gunsmith trick I learned when Elvis was still around.

So a number 3 flathead thanks for explaining tools for those that don't know. Certainly the only people who would need an answer to the impossible screw are people who aren't familiar with common tool sizes and options

It’s too early to buy tools for my plane I don’t even have a pilots license

I've used a London pattern screwdriver for the last 50 years, it works just fine for me.
