Michelin Pilot Sport 5 Update - Never Again!?

Thought I would do a quick update on the Michelin Pilot Sport 5 Tyres, that I currently have installed on my M140i.

It's been a while since I last talked about them more in depth, and I felt that now was a good time to give you a long term update.

How do they feel now they have some wear and tear on them, and would I put them on my car again?

I hope you enjoy the video, and I will see you again In the next one!

PS5 on my tuned M140 here, fully agree on the wet and dry grip. Great tyre. Super Sports were literally dangerous 😅

Its nice when users make such review videos which is helpful.

@roadreg Had the PS5 tyres fitted today. Very pleased, better ride comfort and rear traction is good. The only criticism I'd make is the lack of rim protection, possibly even less than the PS4 tyres I had a while back. Bridgestone and Goodyear do a much better job of that but I guess it's not the main reason for choosing a tyre. The PS5 tyres look fantastic with that velvet black sidewall graphic 😍

Thank you reg for the video. Made a big upgrade and got a BMW like you and jon. Got a 435d. Has PS5 tyres all around when i bought it. One was replaced on the rear when i bought its as it was a mismatch. Hoping to get a lot of miles from them

I've got Michelin PS5's on my BMW G31 20d and I love the grip and handling in wet conditions. They're more silent (duh!) and more comfortable than the RFT Pirelli Cinturato P7's that the car came with from factory, but they also add a bit more resistance so the fuel consumption has gone up a bit. But I can live with that as they're better than the P7's in every other aspect.

Have them on my daily diesel (FWD), I like them a lot 225/45R17 XL but I have one tip : switch rear/front every 10000km or sooner to prevent cupping. I had to replace the rear ones after 25000km and about 5mm left. I mounted the up front for 3000km to see if I could reduce the noise, but no.. new ones it was. They are not that expensive in this size. Pay 212 Euro's per two ex fitting. Sure there are cheaper options and premium brands as well, but we are talking 20 - 30 Euros and usually Michelin you can wear down to 2mm and still have decent grip in wet. That is not the case with many other tires.

I have the PS4S on my M140i xdrive and they are amazing. I had pirelli P zero (runflat) before and it was like i was driving another car, that's how much the michelin changed my car. They are very good in the dry but they are insane in the wet how much grip they have, one of the best in the wet if not the best

I replaced PS4 for PS5 on my tuned golf GTI. Performance feels identical but seems more wear resistant. The only con for 4 and 5 is the steering wheel response, it feels a bit slower / sluggish compared to the F1 and SportCpntact 7 on my A4.
F1 assy 6 on my wife's fabia vrs were identical performers, maybe better on some aspects. Unfortunately performance dropped very soon after some wear and aging.... now they feel like low to medium priced tyres.

My new 140 came with PS5 which made me very happy.
Long time fan of the pilot sports having used them on a variety of rear drivers since I first experienced PS2 and said goodbye to Pirelli Pzero forever. 😂

The wet grip is so important. I’m uk too and it’s totally worth sacrificing the nth degree of dry grip and even feel for the noticeable improvement in traction.

On the Goodyears. My wife used to have those on her Mk4 Supra and they really were special. In the dry.

What handling mods have you got? Are they Bilstein b8 shocks I spot? What else? Cheers

How do the PS5 cope on track? My car isn’t in the same league 325lb-ft/205BHP B12 Pro kit E87 120d stage 2, xHP, 235s rear 225s front 18s. Usually do the MSV novice Trackday at Brands Indy. I’m not as good a driver as yourself just more of a fun day out. Used to take my Boxster down but that was sold off as commuting into London nowadays, can justify have both and need the rear seats…

I agree. I came from ad08r, and before that was ps4s. The ps5 is pretty good on both cold day, raining and also dry. It holds up to my 342whp 500nm fk8. Ill be going to track this friday, will see how it holds up to track abuse

I may have missed it in the video, but how many miles do you estimate that you will get from the rears? I am running Assymeric 6, and they are a fantastic performing tyre but they are wearing relatively fast even with a sedate driving style. 7500 miles and they are almost on the wear bars (It doesn't help that they had only 6mm when new)

Thinking about getting these for my GT86, wonder if I can still hang the ass with the PS5 when the mood takes me.

My M140I is close to getting some new boots for the rear and I was unsure as what to get, Super Sports on at minute which where on the car when I bought it so not experienced any other tyres as yet. Seriously thinking of going with the PS5 as the reviews I've seen are pretty good and can't see anything better, unless you know different.

Err, all road cars have a diff 😉, I assume you meant an open diff?... scratch that, I heard you say later a LSD, that's not a factory fit is it?
How many miles had your car done on those tyres?
I agree that wet grip is important, personally I think a little more so than dry grip (even though I track my M3 occasionally, last time on Monday at a rain soaked Bedford!), I'm also in the UK so I get what you mean about the whether! lol

How many miles you done on them Reg? They look in really good condition.

I have them on my highly modified mk4 golf fwd, I couldn't ask for more in the dry, I kind of wish they where a little better in the wet but they are still really good :)

Changed from OEM MPSS (5mm+ still left but edges worn and in the cold/damp they were crap, but EPIC in summer!) to PS5. SO disappointing as they're clearly a Touring tyre. So much understeer, no feel and quick wearing rears which I changed to GY AS6. Night and day! Huge wet/cold grip and SO quiet, and sporty feel.
