Announcing the Most Awesome Raspberry Pi Lessons of All Times! This time we RUMBLE!

In this class series, we will be using the most excellent Sunfounder Ultimate Raspberry Pi kit, available here: (Affiliate Link)

In this lesson I will take you through the essentials of linux in a one hour lesson. This will teach you how to find yourself around the linux system from the command lines. This knowledge will be necessary for the remainder of this course.

You guys get your hardware ordered so you can follow along at home!

You will also need a Raspberry Pi. I suggest the Raspberry Pi 4. If you do not already have one, this is the most suitable gear I could find:

The Raspberry Pi's are sort of pricy right now, so you can look on ebay or elsewhere to see if there are any deals. You will need a SD card. If you do not already have one, this is a good one:

I like using a wireless keyboard and mouse to have fewer wires. You can certainly use your USB keyboard and mouse, but if you want a nice wireless one, this one works on the pi.

You guys can help me out over at Patreon, and that will help me keep my gear updated, and help me keep this quality content coming:

Hi Paul

You asked what we would like you to cover in future lessons so here goes.

Maybe you could mention backing up the SD card because it can get messed up.

How hard would it be to create a multi-boot SD card? NOOBS can do it but can we?

I’m currently using a Pi zero to make wireless speakers and I’ve also managed to turn my pre-2000 Canon printer into a network printer using a Pi 3 and CUPS.

I think it would be great if everyone was able to share their useful tips via your channel. One can pick up quite a lot by reading the comments but people keep adding to the comments so one has to go back to them in case another little gem has arrived. In case anyone is interested in the tip-sharing idea, here are a few of mine:-

If you’re playing around with different Pi models, you can attach a female-to-female HDMI coupler to the HDMI cable coming from your monitor which means you don’t have to scrabble around underneath the monitor.

I keep my code on my Windows PC so it’s easier to transfer from one SD card to another.

I’ve attached little tags to my SD cards with ‘A’, ’B’ etc on them. This not only make them much easier to remove from the Pi (some cases make it nearly impossible) but you can keep a list of the details of each SD eg 32 or 64 bit, size, whether it’s specific for a Pi running a wildlife camera, print server, connected to a little touchscreen and the password for the card because you might not mind someone ssh-ing into one of your Pi’s but want to keep others private.

I use a USB cable with an on/off switch so that I don’t have to pull out the cable/plug all the time. It’s really annoying when the Pi starts up by itself after a power cut.

I live in France but I buy most things from The Pi Hut or Pimoroni in the UK as, since Brexit, they don’t charge VAT for deliveries to Europe. Saves me a fortune!

Last tip - Resist the Metaverse!!

Enjoying these so far. A good place to start when you don't know where to start. I watch the videos on 1.75x or 2x speed. It makes me think the coffee he's drinking is REALLY working...

Hi Paul, it would be better to place the Pi to the right of the screen as the code will more visible.

Hi Paul,
Another very helpful video, thanks.

I might note that playing around with ‘rm’ and * is a dangerous game…….much safer to be more specific!
