Rishi Sunak criticised Liz Truss’s plans for vast tax cuts saying it would “put fuel on the fire” of the inflation problem and create a “sugar rush boom”.

Mr Sunak denied U-turning on his stance on cutting VAT on energy bills and dismissed suggestions he has shown a “lack of consistency” and “bad judgement” when interviewed by Andrew Neil on Channel 4.

“What we should do is focus on long term growth, because that’s what we need, sustainable growth, not a sugar rush boom”, the former chancellor said.

“If you spend tens of billions of pounds…it pushes up inflation”. Says the guy who was involved in spending £32bn on an app that didn’t work.

“Getting companies to invest” is not the same as “getting companies to pay proper tax rates”

Rishi seems to forget he is partly responsible for the state we are in today. He was literally the chancellor. Anyone that expects him to do anything different is deluding themselves.

I think it's mad how the guy who fucked up the money is telling us what WE need to do to sort it out.. all the while this guy is worth 3 quarters of a billion pound.. absolute madness.. the audacity is out of control

Sorry Rishi, your party has been in charge for 12 years, you have been in charge of the purse strings for 2 of them and enquiry after enquiry shows your government has squandered billions of pounds and YOU have asked to pay it back. Hypocrisy of the highest order and your pal Truss might just be worse.

Sunak: “The tax cuts will be for my friends, donors and family!” So I didn’t lie when I told you about the cuts they just weren’t for 99.9% of you :) lol

Help people with the cost of living? The company that owns the energy companies went from 262m to 1.34b for the same time period in one year, more than a billion extra profits!...the same year our KWh price cap has risen ridiculous amounts. Just pure greed.

I worry that Truss’s argument is pure pandering to public sentiment, taking the popular position rather than the prudent one. Whether there’s any truth in that assessment, I deeply mistrust politicians who are willing to do so. Sunak seems to be making the unpopular argument, but it doesn’t mean he’s wrong.

Ironic how he made a name in politics by spending enormous amounts of money on short term government schemes then says we need to be careful because of inflation… inflation which him and his friends in the US caused. Complete lack of integrity

"It'll make everyone poorer!" Everyone is already poorer except the millionaires that are having record profits. He doesn't see you as a person.

If Mr Rishi becomes Prime Minister of the UK, maybe next year the party will break up again because Rishi has many negative aspects. I think it would be good for the British people and the new generation if the foreign Secretary Ms Liz Truss becomes UK Prime Minister. Mr Rishi and his wife does tax invasion.
Petrol price is as high as £1.95p per litre and food and housing prices are now impacted by inflation but no one seems to care. What did Mr Rishi do when he was (chancellor) finance minister? Using the Russia vs Ukraine war and covid-19 as excuses? Please do something for the British middle class and lower class people. Most British Prime Ministers and MPs lives in luxury when they were in power. They do nothing for the lower class, a real shame for all British people.🇬🇧

How someone who didn't pay tax and written off his wife covid loans can be PM? Only in Britain.

i don’t think he is the best to talk about taxes, he is the richest member of parliament, and his billionaire wife still somehow avoids taxes.

Here’s an idea why don’t you cut back on your spending and then give a tax break as opposed to borrowing?

Yes, let's charge companies less tax and have individuals take the NI / tax burden...

Here’s an idea why don’t you make all the companies who took part in furlough pay for the return of that debt? Not sure why those of us who worked every day need to be hit with the same tax increases as the ones who sat on their bums for a year.

Won’t do that though will you as it’ll mean your friend or your wife might have to pick up a bill or two.
