Did you know back in the 1960s, 18 different airlines had put down an order for the yet-to-be-built Concorde, summing up 75 Concordes in total?
But after the horrific crash of the Tupolev -144 at the Paris airshow in 1973, all airlines cancelled their orders. Except for Air France and British Airways, who were stuck with the project as their two governments were the ones financing and building them. Only 20 Concordes were built, and only 14 ever entered service!

It was for more reasons than just the 144 crashing. Fuel costs and limited routes at Mach 2 were bigger reasons.

i think, they rather cancelled the orders because of the speed registrations (below mach 1) for the plane over land area which the USA created because their Boeing 2707 project was cancelled. It had (at least officially) nothing to do with the TU144. There was just no need for the plane for most airlines.

The very special part is, technically Singapore Airlines had one. For the livery, it had British Airways on one side and Singapore Airlines on the other.

The most beautiful commercial jet ever built.
Period.
This is the Concorde.

An aircraft that was ahead of its time and shrank the world. Friends of my family were lucky to fly on one many years ago.

What does the TU144 crash have anything to do with companies cancelling Concorde? What killed the Concorde was the 1st oil shock which made its high fuel consumption no longer affordable. It also did not help that Concorde could only fly supersonic over the oceans and that it could not cross the Pacific.

I'm pretty sure when I was a kid living under the Heathrow flight path I saw a Singapore liveried Concorde fly over once. It would have been late 70s

As a kid, The concord was on my list to fly in when I grew up.

The Tu144 only crashed because the pilots were trying to show up Concorde. They entered a high G maneuver like they were flying a MiG and inevitably lost control.
Concorde lost orders due to the sonic booms overland and the smoke emanating from the engines which were still in development.

The crash didn't really have much to do with the order cancels. Too expensive to operate and the sonic boom issues.

A beautiful aircraft but very noisy taking off. I remember seeing it. And it was very fast. The Tu144 was never in the same league. They were very unstable. Concord was apparently perfection to fly. The final Air France crash was greatly unfortunate due to debris on the runway which punctured the wing tanks. If that hadn't happened, who knows what today's aircraft would be like. In the end the economic advantage of the 747 was to win over elegance and speed.

Yeah it’s a shame the Concord had to be retired, because what a beast of a jet it was. Very ahead of its time.

My parents were on one of those concords in the 70’s. Their flights were successful at least!

Concorde was amazing. Travelled on it several times as a kid.

Hearing/feeling the pilot throttle up on takeoff is a core memory for me. It was so fuckin cool.

The biggest problem with the Concorde was that it was waaaay before it's time.
An amazing aircraft with an even more amazing cruising speed.
The Tupolev fail had nothing to do with this.
If this jet broke through, modern airlines would have been out of business.

The TU144 was a stand-alone project and a failure. It shouldn’t be mentioned in the same story as Concorde. Concorde was a technical marvel and gave birth to Airbus’ roots. And here we are.

And to think, it was FOD that ultimately killed the Concorde.

Iran ordered them, but they didn’t cancel because of the crash; they cancelled because of the revolution. My first type rating was done by an Iranian trainer who fled to Canada, who had the Concorde on his licence.

It wasnt the accident of a different plane what caused the cancellation. It was the restrictions to supersonic speeds along the most profitable routes.

The most surprising thing is how small it was, the windows make it look bigger but each window wasn't much bigger than a smartphone screen.
