On June 28, 1914, a young man affiliated with a Serbian nationalist organization assassinated the Archduke of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in the Sarajevo incident. A few days later, Austria declared war on Serbia. At that time, Europe was divided into two factions: the Triple Alliance of Germany, Austria, and Italy, and the Triple Entente of Britain, France, and Russia. The Sarajevo incident intensified the conflict between these two blocs.
On August 4, 1914, when German forces crossed the Belgian border, the United Kingdom immediately demanded their withdrawal. As Germany ignored this demand, the UK declared war on Germany. It was the moment when the nightmare of World War I began. The war, initially thought to end quickly, dragged on until November 11, 1918. The First World War, with over ten million casualties and the introduction of ruthless new weapons, remains one of the greatest tragedies in human history.
