Al Hirt seemed to always make other trumpet players envious. He could Triple -Tongue using only one tongue. His wife, Beverly, once told me that He had a PhD in music and that he could have been called Dr. Hirt. Al’s music was amazing and sweet. He impressed me greatly when I was a very young man. My hero with a Horn.

A memorable evening in 1960, I think, when I was in New Orleans. First I caught Pete Fountains show, around 8 as I recall, then I went across the street to Dan's Pier 600 for the later Al Hirt show. I had been a fan of both for some time, having bought some of their then new then LP stereo records. Looking back, that was one of the most memorable evenings I ever spent at a concert. Two great musicians. We will miss them both.

Al Hirt was the greatest Dixieland player ever. If you have a doubt google Al Hirt on Lawrence Welk. And he got that amazing tone with a Al Hirt Jet-tone D. I bought that in High School for marching band. It is a pea shooter super shallow V cup. Al was also the master of the shake. He could shake a note and come out of it exactly right. Al was definitely the King.

Dan's Pier 600, '62 or 63 Jokes like Wanna hear a great piano player---go down Bourbon St. about 5 or 6 blocks. Thrill of my young life!

Went to New Orleans soon after getting married mainly to see him but for some reason he was not playing that night. We settled for Pete Fountain. He was good but I did so want to see Al Hirt in person. I was so disappointed.

My folks were lucky enough to be and Mickie Finn's in San Diego in 1968 when Al was there, and played an impromptu set.  They treasured that memory!

A very nice tune which makes me remember when I was sixteen I was rather shy with girls and had a hard time starting a relationship with them. I overcame it when I was seventeen fortunately. When I first heard it and knew its title I remember I thought "Boy this would have been my song a year ago!"

Tone somehow bright and sweet at the same time. Fantastic fluency, amazing tonguing. Perfect intonation that stays true over his entire dynamic range, from conversational to full afterburner. Similar in some ways to Doc Severinsen, but with more soul and creative imagination (nothing against Doc, who I respect and admire also). Doc has slightly more power output at the high end of his range, but without the roundness and polish of Al Hirt.

I've never heard another trumpet player who can double- and triple-tongue as well as Al Hirt, over as long a phrase.
