combining barbell training with 3 days as a construction laborer gave me best progress in strength and mass at 65yrs!
I worked 25yrs as an IT/tech with 4 days barbell training and i agree 100%.
I follow Dan John’s push, pull, squat, hinge, loaded carries🤙🏽🤙🏽

My first trainer was of this persuasion. Functional movement for life. Carrying heavy shopping up three flights of stairs, lifting a child in and out of a car seat, being able to squat to retrieve stuff from a low cupboard etc etc. as always Mark, you are correct.

Love the content and the context of the athleticism of everyday life.

An important addition to that theory is that the farm boy was constantly loading and unloading taught him how to prepare for sudden physical exertion like a hit or lift in sports. When I started with kettlebells i would get two ‘bells and put one on the ground and the other on top of something about head high. Then I cleaned or snatched to one from the ground to put it of the shelf then pulled the one already on the shelf to the rack position and put it down. That’s one rep.

Felt stronger than I ever had when I was working as a union laborer. This checks out my mind.

Two 5 gallon buckets of water, walking 1km to fill an old bathtub for cows to drink from until they stopped drinking and I filled the tub. Every morning, every afternoon, on top of everything else my dad made me do on the grade 3 to I joined the army, and did the same thing but with ammo instead of water, and .50cals instead of cows lmao.

I just felled a tree and stacked wood this afternoon. After dinner is was some stretching, hanging knee raises, and 30 minutes on the treadmill. Early to bed tonight!

functional strength is the way for most people, I'd say, over the "look good in mirror" that a lot try for .. ymmv, ofc

Good video. But I like to share something I learned from ups, is repetitive motions can hurt ur body. So if u move 20 logs to the right u should also move the same to the left. Like how u handle kettlebells.

I remember Chael Sonnen saying his dad had a big pile of rocks in the backyard and his dad would make him move the whole pile from one side of the yard to the other. Then back again. Every day.

When I was a kiddo I used to climb the rope in the barn to get to the hayloft.

When I was 12 years old I was helping my builder fafer with cement bags loading and iff loading. Then mixing and wheelbarrowing on a thin board. A 40 yer old couldn’t do it!!!

Yes, I know powerful farmers, and aside fromexertions at odd angles, their work is sort of "high rep".

Does this high rep nature of their work also contribute to their high strength ?

Yep. I grew up farm and was faster than the boys in track and was stronger in gym training..

Let me get this right, if you lift heavy stuff all day….and then lift some more heavy stuff at the gym and then do conditioning for sports all this with a fresh young body ….you will be strong?!?!?
