A case against Peterson's understanding of the concept of moral relativism.

Not sure if this purports to be an argument against moral relativism, but it certainly is not. It's merely an emotional appeal to consequence. And even the purported consequences are questionable. Upload the whole lecture.

He didn’t dispute the central truth claim of moral relativism

The book "The closing of the American mind" by Allen Bloom speaks in detail about "value relativism" and "moral relativism". What he has to say about this is critical to understand the forces that are at work in higher education today. Relativism destroys critical thinking, leads to nihilism and is a barrier to openness. It's interesting to note that the Philosopher Allen Bloom Ph.D. taught at the University of Toronto from 1970-79 as well as Cornel and Yale among others.

How is this an argument against moral relativism? Two people are coming to the same conclusion in what is moral in a relative way in order for each other to survive. I want others as you’d want them to do one to you. He’s arguing for it in order to maintain a functional society and not against it. What am I missing here? 🤷‍♂️

He actually argues against moral relativism as if people are championing it to be good for society... it's a truth claim not a suggestion for how to build a society.

This video wasn’t about moral relativism lmao

Just because a certain moral standpoint is required to have the foundations of a stable society doesn’t mean that said moral standpoint is universally correct. That just means that one moral stance best suits civilisation as we know it. Entirely different moral establishments exist within both the pockets of the West and certainly beyond, and there is no real measurement you can go by to determine one establishment’s superiority to another

Umm... That was an argument *for* moral relativism.

I'm not a fan of moral relativism either but money is not what Peterson said it is. Heck, the government just prints more of it whenever they want.

He supposedly hates relativism but in every debate I’ve seen him in he demands they define every word in every sentence and then disagrees with every proposed definition. “That’s nawt awbvious to me!” Sounds pretty relativistic to me.

This is supposed to be an “antidote” to moral relativism? All he basically said was that money has to have value or people will do bad things. And sure I guess, but how is that an argument against moral relativism?

Jordon trying to justify objective morality with God is futile. Without God morality is subjective, and there is no moral obligation to benefit society. Where is he getting his oughts from. I believe in objective morality, but that I can justify that morality in a transcent God. Jordon can't seem to do philosophy.

I could perhaps be missing the context of the rest of the lecture, but Peterson has gone on many times about how reality is a mix of subjectivity and objectivity in his lectures. I've listened to him quite a lot and really admire the way he's helped shape my life, but this argument in particular seems contradictory to me. If I'm missing some elements here, please provide me with the rest of the context because I'd really like to know. I'm just shocked at his stance on relativism since, in most cases, he seems to use it himself.

"i'm not a fan of moral relativism for a variety of reasons " ...because he's a relativist

Morality has always been a huge problem for religion. A religious person can be moral, but they have no way to explain, through faith, why any act is right or wrong. See how badly apologists fail on this. Or can any apologist manage it? All true morality is humanistic.
