THANK YOU!! People can’t wrap their heads around this. The wellness industry is the biggest culprit of all.

I am a doctor (a radiologist to be specific) and while I do have a general idea about fitness & nutrition that I would gladly share with my patients, almost none of it comes from my medical studies, but rather from my own fitness journey. It's not something that is taught in medical school, and even less during your residency program. Most of the doctors don't care that much about this topic really, unless they're intrinsically interested in it. If someone needs some specific dietary advice I always suggest a dietician instead.

Dr. Oz is the OG of this talking about everything except cardiovascular surgery. Dr. Gupta talks about everything except neurosurgery on CNN. Eric Berg is the chiropractor you are talking about, the "keto expert". Peter Attia is a trained surgeon who crowned himself a "longevity" expert.

Thank you for saying this!! I see the side of 'yes they went to school and earned the Dr. title' but at the same time I find it a bit misleading if the education that earned them their degree/title has nothing to do with the fitness/nutrition topic they are giving advice in

Very true- glad to see others voicing this and respectfully saying it. Over the years have noticed many using titles outside of their lane. Great content!

One of the reasons I have so much trust and gratitude for my medical team! 🎉 wish more docs took their ego out of the practice

I wish more people would do this for other scientific areas. If you're not an expert in that SPECIFIC area/field, you shouldnt be giving advice related to that field outside of what is common knowldge. For example, being an MD, Nurse, Engineer, or a Ph.D, even in some other field of biology, does not mean you are a microbiologist, immunologist, molecular biologist, etc. Weighing in on other fields and sub-fields, as if your professional training in one field or sub-field extends into another, is ome of the most dangerous things you can do. The massive amount of information that are covered and specific from field to field are gargantuan. You're better off just reiterating the scientific consensus, saying you dont know, and then reffering that person to an expert in that given field.

EXACTLY. THANK YOU, such an important message! We don’t hear this nuance often enough. 🫂💜

my first trainer's expertise was mobility and track. i appreciate so much that he did a littke interview to get to know my current level and future goals for different time spanda and that he would be honest with me and suggest other trainers for if my goal ever shifted. he knows one day i will need someone else once im comfortable with my mobility enough to move on to strength and stamina building. safety is priority in both our minds

Totally with you! I just wish there were more consistent requirements to get a nutritionist title… I see so many nutritionists giving out advice that seems like it came straight off of eating disorder tumblr under the guise of weight loss advice. It sucks how divisive we make food in our culture

The same thing can be said for nurses. There is no way we can know EVERYTHING in the medical field. We all are specialized in some degree, or are not and just have general information about everything, but not a master of any one specific topic.

My dad's a doctor and his field isn't nutrition. So he sends his patients to a dietition if they want or need help with their nutrition. He learned a bit about what you should eat and stuff but he can only give very basic advice safely. And thats totaly ok you can't know and do everything just because you got a doctor title

They aren't an authority regardless.

yes!! there is actually a name for this fallacy. i forget the exact term, but its the whole idea of using an “experts” opinion even when they aren’t an expert in the topic being discussed.

And those chiropractors posing as doctors because they did phd/doctorate in a chiropracting school won't tell the people that, it's written in tiny font somewhere on their page, yet they give diet and fitness advice. Not to mention all the fitness influencers who have absolutely zero formal education in what they do😂

Question. Do body weight exercises like power yoga or calisthenics count towards strength training if not using weights or dumbbells?

Cause they dont teach much fitness and nutritional in medical school atleast in my country in india.

doesn't that mean you shouldn't give nutritional advice as a personal trainer either since you're not a dietician?
