In this video I explain the main processes of assigning elemental formulae to peaks in mass spectra, based on their accurate mass and their isotopic distribution. This includes how to work out all formulae that lie within a certain mass error range of your peak mass; how to use the Lewis, Senior, and Kind and Fiehn rules to cut down your list of possible assignments to those that are chemically plausible; and then how to use the isotopic distribution to focus on the most likely candidates.
