Cacti Care Tips — Plant One On Me — Ep 032

Thirty two weeks ago I launched Homestead Brooklyn’s Plant One On Me, an informal question-and-answer series on all your green home and gardening tips. Today marks not only a new episode of Plant One On Me—but a new type of episode: FIELD TRIPS!

After doing a couple episodes on succulents, I got a few queries about cacti, so instead of me talking about cacti, I thought I’d go to the source and visit my friend Richard’s cacti and succulent greenhouse. Even though he’s semi-retired, Richard shows off his full-of-character cacti every Saturday (during the warm season) at the McCarren Park Greenmarket. If you see him—be sure to stop by, say “hi” and get a cool cacti from him. In this episode, he tours us around his greenhouse, gives us the major cacti care tips, and even belts out some tunes.

I just met Richard today at Grand Army Plaza Greenmarket and he is such an amazing person. Really passionate about his work and has great stories to tell. He told me about your video and I'm so happy I got to see one of his greenhouses in it. His collection of plants is really impressive! He told me that when he started his business he ordered the cacti seeds from around the world. Obviously there was no internet at that time, he was just corresponding with the sellers by mail. I will definitely stop by again to talk with him and buy him several plants. He needs our support for his business <3

I personally respect and adore cactus more than any other plant and consider them as a source of inspiration, motivation and positivity just because the way they surive during all odds and makes the surroundings colourful with their beautiful flowers where no one even can think of survival

Note to self 4:30
Summer April- October (as infrequently as once a month (bare minimum (not ideal), as frequently as twice a week (more often for more sun(make sure it dries out first))))
Winter November - March (no water at all)
During growing season (summer) fertilize with fish-based fertilizer (if fertilizer is okay for plants I'm gonna eat). 8:55 for more info on plant nutrition.

This guy is delightful! I love his passion for cacti and singing, he has such knowledge! Love this series by the way, I have a lot of the plants you talk about, so the tips are always welcome! Could you please do a video on fruit bearing plants like bananas, figs, berrys, apples, pears, citrus and all the others? Would love to know if you have any fruittrees in you home :). I have a banana plant inside, and apples, pears, berrys, figs, plums and grapes outside. Love Kippetje too :D
