I disagree. One way to do an anti war film is to not show the war directly. Only the consequences. Grave of the Fireflies, for example, is a profoundly antiwar film.

A truly anti war film would be unwatchable.

I generally agree with Truffaut's comments. However, Come and See is the closest example in my opinion to a true anti-war film as you're ever likely to see. There aren't that many war films that left me feeling scarred in the same way that Come and See did. I'm also pretty sure that Truffaut died before it came out, so I'm curious to see what he would've made of it.

"Johnny Got His Gun" 1971 is truly an anti-war movie.

Makes a good point. How can you be anti anything then for the purpose of a good movie make what you are against look good?

An anti-war film would be one where you believe the lead character is going to lead the platoon to victory but instead all the characters get shot at and die at the start of the battle.

Catch 22 and Dr Strangelove might be considered anti war.

Yes Come and See. What about The Zone of Interest? Or is that more anti Holocaust than anti war?

In the UK there was a series about WW2 called the 'World At War', narrated by Lawrence Olivier. At the end of the series, for conclusion, they spoke to some Vet's. And though the Vet's acknowledged the horror, the loss of friends, etc, what they remembered and reminisced about was the adventure, and all that goes with it. I think the same goes with war films.
P.S. Have I just restated Truffeau's point?

Come and see is the closest thing to an anti war film I've seen, literally unbearable to watch.

Do a video on “The Conversation” from 1974. I watched it for Jim Cazale and got so much more. An incredibly young Harrison Ford and a completely unhinged performance by Gene Hackman. If you’re a Hackman fan I can’t think of a better film.

Thank you for making a point and not backing it up with anything.

Depends what you mean by “anti war”. If you mean “to discourage war from happening” then there are plenty of films that have the emotional affect of showing how the reality of war affects characters. Has a film ever discouraged a war from happening?

I recently watched Threads (1984) for the first time and it’s the closest thing I’ve ever seen to an anti-war movie. Of course, all films must be dramatised and somewhat enjoyable (even negative emotions like fear and sadness need to be evoked in a somewhat entertaining way or else nobody would watch them) but that film depicts nuclear holocaust so bleakly that it really makes you worry about it, which then turns into anger against these nuclear armed states and the economic system that keeps bringing us all to the brink of annihilation.

I suppose it just shows the consequences of war and not so much the ‘action’ and so it has an easier time than other movies in this regard.

Platoon is probably my favorite “anti-war” film

I think I agree. The best war films are ambiguous and don’t hammer you with easy answers about human nature and conflict

Come and See is the only one that I can accept as a true anti-war movie. Absolute mental that movie is
