Populist parties are set to do well in Germany's upcoming state elections, as frustrations over immigration drive more voters away from traditional parties. That's a challenge for local businesses, which increasingly rely on both skilled and unskilled immigrant workers to fill gaps in the labor market. Clemens Fuest with Germany’s Ifo Institute speaks to DW about the possible consequences of the upcoming elections and why immigration policy remains important for German companies.

What Germany needs, wants and acts to get skilled immigrants are completely different from each other. The very fact that I waited over 6 months for a work visa, despite having a signed contract with a company was shocking back in 2017 as it is shocking for my younger family members going through the same nearly year-long process in a totally different country! There is no respect for skilled people, before coming here and even after move. I was even shouted at for not speaking German only 3 months in, in a foreigners office.

They don't want labour. They want cheap labour.

Translation: "We're going to have to start raising wages if you guys don't keep blindly supporting cheap immigrant labour at all costs"

It's easy to cross into Germany if you simply throw away passport at the border. However, the bureaucratic marathon that skilled immigrants face is exhausting. Ironically, Germany has discontinued its program to accept Afghans who assisted the German army, as well as those who served as civil servants and judges. Now, these individuals are left at the mercy of the Taliban

But the big question is, is in high degree among all the immigrants of the last ten years, high skilled workers? Or in the contrary the majority are just human waste?

I watched this channel go from reasonable, well-rounded center-left to neoliberal corporate insanity in the span of two years.
Wtf happened?

I’m an American and I’m dating my German boyfriend but it is impossible to move him to the US as they’ve taken away any chance of doing so. We want to be married and have kids in Germany but it seems like that’s going to be impossible now even with legal immigration and a lot of money.

This is because German youth simply refuse to study hard science courses in university. In my Engineering masters programme, almost 90% of the students are foreigners. Most Engineering master’s programs ( at least Electrical Engineering related programs) are now taught entirely in English because of this.

As a retail investor, I am getting increasingly skeptical about German companies to invest in. Most foreign talents have always found the country to be unwelcoming. Now, it's getting worse. Innovation and productivity need a positive atmosphere. Chinese, Mexcans, Indians, Vietnamese are producing quality products at double the rate for half the salary, making it extremely hard to compete. The economy is contracting but politicians are exploiting the situation for short term benefits.

WOW…. economic stagnation, Pay workers with the minimum in the economy. And Companies, Sell Resources to Workers, Electricity, Oil, Gas, etc. At astronomical prices, renting a flat is three times higher than the salary of a worker..WOW

Judging by the title card I thought it was about far left "corporate tax", "tax the rich", "4 day work week". But i guess according to DW corporations in a fact more afraid of lack of slav.... i mean cheap labor.

What exactly does Germany stand to gain from alliance with Russia? Germany is stronger now, politically, than it's been in generations.
