Is GIMP Free Photoshop?

GIMP is the one truly free competitor to Photoshop. It has some catching up to do. But does it let you auto-select the subject of a photograph? Remarkably, yes it does.

Actually, GIMP has more layer modes than Photoshop; better scripting capabilities; a more sophisticated gradient editor; a panoramic view feature that Photoshop lacks, etc.

I never knew this thanks. (Bit I find Affinity photo an easier-than-gimp. But it's non-free but better price than Adobe).

Can someone write a macro that does all that other stuff so all you have to do is draw the circle around it and then tell it to get rid of the background?

With the current frequency for Gimp versions, GIMP will not come close to Photoshop within the next decade, and I mean close to the well functioning professional tool, Photoshop, from before the deroute with generative AI.

Gimp is amateuristic and far from photoshop. Not for professionals. Just be honest.
