Russia's narrative win on war in Ukraine - outside the West | GZERO World

The perspective of non-Western countries on Russia-NATO tensions.

As tensions between Russia and NATO continue to escalate, Ian Bremmer and former US Ambassador to NATO Ivo Daalder discuss on GZERO World the perspective of non-Western countries, who are walking a complicated geopolitical tightrope between the two sides.

Nations like India, Brazil and South Africa have a strong diplomatic and economic ties to both Russia and the West. They're being put in a difficult position of condemning the war in Ukraine without supporting Western-led sanctions, which are creating high fuel prices and rising inflation for their own citizens.

The West needs to make clear that the negative effects of the war are a consequence of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, not of the sanctions themselves, Daalder argues. Changing the narrative to emphasize Russia's responsibility for the conflict is crucial if the West wants to maintain support for the long haul, which Daalder says could continue for decades.

From an Indian view there is no difference between attack on Ukraine vs. Attack on Syria/Iraq/Vietnam.

Try to guess the pattern. The world outside the West has already figured it out.
A. (1) Saudi Arabia (energy superpower) has devastated Yemen since 2015. (2) Extreme sanctions were *NOT* imposed on them. (3) *NO* global economic crisis followed.
B. (1) The US (economic superpower), UK, Poland, Australia launched an illegal war of aggression that devastated Iraq (2) Extreme sanctions were *NOT* imposed on them. (3) *NO* global economic crisis followed.
C. (1) Russia (energy superpower) devastated Chechnya in the 90s. (2) Extreme sanctions were *NOT* imposed on them. (3) *NO* global economic crisis followed.
D. (1) Russia (energy superpower) launched an illegal war of aggression that has devastated Ukraine. (2) Extreme sanctions *WERE* imposed on them. (3) A global economic crisis *DID* follow.

Do you see the pattern?
Also, does the West really think that they will change any minds by repeating their condescending claims that 85+% of all humanity ("Global South") has been duped by Russia? This entire interview seems like just two Westerners trying to preach to the choir.

More people in the global south died because of famine during WWII. Because allied or axis powers plundered their food.

The argument that the economic crisis is not caused by sanction but rather by Russia's choice to continue the war *incorrectly* presumes that sanctions will end as soon as the war ends. An end to the war does not automatically end the sanctions (the cause of the economic crisis) because neither US nor EU sanctions have any provision automatically triggering their end. The texts of the sanctions do not include anything similar in spirit to:

"These sanctions are to end within 3 days of [neutral body] confirming that all Russian troops have left Ukraine [and other conditions]."

It would have been wise to include such a provision since this would have actually given Russia an economic incentive to end the war. Since there are no circumstances under which sanctions are automatically lifted, the EU sanctions will remain EU law until the EU passes legislation repealing them. This will require the approval of all the governments of all 27 EU countries, including Poland, Latvia, and Estonia.

I can confidently say that it will take several years (at a minimum) for Poland's government to agree to lift EU sanctions. So even IF Russia was to surrender unconditionally to Ukraine (a pipe dream), these sanctions would remain EU law for at least several years after the war ends. During this time, the sanctions would continue to damage the global economy.

The point is that regardless of whether the war ends or continues, EU sanctions will continue to strangle the global economy. This shows that it is not the war in and of itself that is damaging the global economy, but the sanctions.

Most countries in the global south do know that Russia is the culprit for the war. But they also want the war to end because it hurts their development.

Brilliant interviewing style by the inimitable Ian Bremmer. Bremmer puts the bar high as it can go in demanding the best from his guests. What the west is not realizing is that it has the answer for all of the countries still clinging to Russia's coat tails and crying stop the sanctions. We simply have to put it in capital letters: SOVEREIGN countries are the line in the sand that simply no one or no country can cross. Do so, and it will unleash the fires of Hades from the west. NATO countries and the west, which thanks to President Putin is united like never before, will release all fury and resistance to anyone who invades a sovereign state, because the Ukraine is a sovereign country and in our mindset, it must be liberated at all costs. Full stop.
