How To Get a PERFECT Finish

General Finishes Arm-R Seal is an amazing product. However, if not done correctly, it can lead to much headache and time loss. Here is how the company itself says to apply, and what works best for me!

Enjoy!

first time using this as wipe on and so far it's been extremely easy to apply that way and I haven't noticed any imperfections related to the finish at all. It appears to self level as it dries but when wiping because it's thinner it doesn't drip at all you basically can just coat everything and get it "wet" and then it's done

That music was like fingernails on a chalkboard. But in order to hear you I had to keep the volume up.

Im putting polyurethane on my live edge and was wondering about your use of the foam brush. Wouldn’t the foam brush produce more bubbles as opposed to a regular fine bristle brush. Thanks

This method worked great. I did 3 coats on a curly maple box, sanding with 600 between coats. Best results I've ever had with satin arm r seal. I like the music as well.

Thanks. I need to finish a walnut project, so I appreciate seeing your use of Arm-R-Seal on walnut. I agree walnut is the best wood in terms of the way it looks and the way it works. I have been using walnut for 50 years. I remember my shop teacher in high school 50 years ago tried to talk me out of using walnut since it was so expensive - about $1.25 a board foot at the time. I have traditionally used Watco Oil and Johnson's Paste Wax as the finish which is OK, but the finish is not that durable and needs to be re-waxed every few years. I have a new walnut Hammond B-3 Organ bench that I will be sitting on, so I need a more durable finish. Do you think Arm-R-Seal will withstand the rigors of my butt sitting on the seat as I practice my Jimmy Smith jazz runs on the B-3? I have also sprayed Prothane (it is like a urethane finish that goes on like lacquer and dries in minutes not hours), but Prothane is hard to get since it has been banned in most air quality districts. Cheers!

For a large surface like an 8 x 4 table do you apply it the same way? Seems like it sets too fast for using that small sponge brush? For the last coat do you sand again or just buff it with a paper bag?

I use a LOT of the Arm-r-seal (500+BdFt per month of Walnut) but, I apply with rags and get a super nice finish. My biggest issue with it is that it always gets gummy towards the end of each jug. I haven't found a way to stop this except for transferring into a smaller container to reduce the amount of air the product is exposed to. Great video. Give the wiping method a try once and see how you like it.

This is exactly the sheen I'm looking for. I've always been a fan of satin lacquer and how smooth it looks. This has the same look but more durability. Thanks. Oh, is this the new satin sheen formula or the old one? I've read that the new satin formula is too glossy for some people.

I've been told that it is best to use glossy for the builds and then only use satin on the top coat. Per the finishing workshop where I heard this, the comment was that the satin has add-ins to dull the finish, and is only needed on the top coat, thus glossy on the build will be clearer. Any thoughts on that? I have not tested this to see how true/not true. thanks.

I am building a walnut dining table which, of course, is much bigger than that piece of wood. Would you still recommend brushing the finish on instead of wiping with a rag? And how many coats would you do?

Music, particularly at the volume, is a major distraction from excellent content. Thanks!

Cool stuff! Do you sand with high grit before each re-coat?

Thanks for posting the video. I just used the exact same product for the first time. Do you sand in between coats? I lightly hand sanded with 400 grit and did three coats. What are your thoughts? Thanks!
