Introduction to the Health Impacts from Climate Change

Dr. Heidi Honegger Rogers is honored to join the Peace Engineering ECHO community to present how climate change impacts the health of individuals, families and communities. Dr. Rogers integrates the concepts of environmental, human and planetary health to share how our health and well-being is interconnected with our natural and built environments. She gives an overview of the environmental impacts of climate change and introduces the health impacts that we are currently seeing and can expect in the future.
Dr. Rogers focuses on presenting problem sets in the areas of mitigation and adaptation to improve the climate change related human health outcomes going forward. She hopes that this work will help to support ongoing innovation, research, community engagement and community lead policy and program implementation toward justice and equity for our local, national and global communities.

Dr. Heidi Honegger Rogers a family nurse practitioner, advanced practice holistic nurse and a clinician educator - assistant professor at the University of New Mexico (UNM) College of Nursing. As an educator, she has led the graduate level evidence informed practice, nursing leadership in population health and the theoretical foundations courses as well as serving as a chair of several Doctor of Nursing Practice translational research projects. She has a strong theoretical foundation in environmental health and has had educational training in Community Based Participatory Research, climate change and health adaptation, and climate change communication. She has designed and is lead for an interprofessional course on Climate Change and Public Health Preparedness. She also currently serves as the Director of Interprofessional Education for the UNM Health Sciences Center, which is responsible for the development of integrated curriculum and experiential content for eight HSC and UNM health professions programs. She is an active member of the environmental health and climate change work groups at the Alliance of Nurses for Healthy Environments. She is also a member of the Lancet Countdown US Policy Brief team, which is looking at the impacts of climate change and related natural disasters on health and well-being in the US.
