Turkey, Somalia Expand Cooperation, Ankara's Ship Arrives for Oil & Gas Exploration | Firstpost Africa
Turkey's seismic research vessel Oruç Reis arrived on the Somalian coast to begin searching for oil and gas on Friday. It was officially inaugurated by Somalia's President Hassan Sheikh Mohamoud during a welcome ceremony. This comes after the two nations inked an agreement in March this year that granted Turkey's state oil firm exclusive rights to explore and produce hydrocarbons in three blocks in Somalia, covering 15,000 square kilometres. Experts see Ankara's move as more of a political one, rather than commercial. Just like all major players, Ankara is now also seeking to expand its influence in Africa. It is competing with major powers like Russia, China, the US, and former colonial ruler France for a foothold. Will Turkey emerge as the next big player in Africa? Watch the video for more.
