I wonder exactly what calculations are behind Erdoğan's decision. He is only ever on his own side. On the other hand, he makes a perfect 'canary in the coal mine'. He has decided Russia is neither a threat nor a benefit.

That is interesting.

If putins ideology is right, than shouldnt russia be part of Sweden, whos people, the Varangians, were the first "russians"?

"But Taiwan was part of China two thousand years ago." So fucken what. It doesn't matter if it was Chinese territory in the 1940s. It is Taiwan now.

Im a Turk, I havent heard any news or government statement regarding this issue. But i think, just to put pressure on russia against india’s veto against turkey’s membership to brics. International politics are not complicated as much as you think of. Especially if the actors are countries like turkey.

If Putin is a benevolent liberator of ethnic Russians beyond Russia's borders, when will he be a benevolent liberator of ethnic Russians within Russia's borders?

Y'know, for a guy who believes that all historical Russian lands are okay to "reconquer", Putin seems awfully keen on not giving Kaliningrad back to Germany.

He knows the Ukrainians looked out for the Crimean Tartars ... and Putin is not ... and the Turkish people pay attention to how Turkish peoples are treated

Erdogan is an eccentric leader, following strange and counterintuitive strategies entirely for his own reasons. He has pursued a reverse logic in his economics, to the ire of many of his people, who were impoverished as a result, while gaining populist loyalty from the uneducated and superstitious masses. His approach seems always to do the unexpected, even if it makes no sense and does not work for Türkiye, so long as it works for him. Like many people however, it seems that he sits on the fence because he still cannot quite believe that we could all be rid of russia forever. If leaders just found some balls, the evil empire would crumble to dust. the moskal have feet of clay.

Dictators with territorial and militaristic goals have a habit of overstepping themselves. Erdogan should take a lesson from Putin in that regard. Both want to see the glory days come back to their country. Trouble is, no one else does.

Imagine England claiming that all countries controlled by us under the "empire" were historically ours and therefore we are taking back control. I dont think there is ANY country that would agree (and not laugh) But there are people (and countries) around the world that agree to russia doing the same to countries connected to them.

Putin does know Americans and Canadians well. We are not the same people and do not consider us the same people. When asked, a Canadian will respond that they are not an American, and when asked, an American will tell you they are not a Canadian. Sure we are strong friends. It has become part of some Canadians to travel south to the United States during the winter, and many Americans head north to Canada during the summer. In spite of our friendship there are many differences between our people, cultures and experiences. One from either nation may cross borders easily; however, you are required to have the proper documentation. Putin should often just keep his mouth closed.

Erdoğan’s sudden demand is hot on the heels of the recent Georgia elections where the results are disputed. Georgia was originally a part of the Ottoman empire, so this is an excellent trigger for Erdoğan’s move.
