1. Lesotho has a rich history that dates back to the 19th century. Originally inhabited by the Basotho people, the region became unified under King Moshoeshoe I in the 1820s as he sought refuge from Zulu and other invasions. The Basotho engaged in resistance against British colonial expansion, leading to conflicts such as the Gun War (1880-1881). In 1868, Basutoland became a British protectorate, leading to social and political changes. The country gained independence on October 4, 1966, becoming the Kingdom of Lesotho. Despite independence, it faced political instability, culminating in a military coup in 1986. Since the 1990s, Lesotho has worked towards democratization, though challenges remain. Today, it is known for its mountainous terrain and as one of the few regions in Africa with a predominantly African rule.
2. Lesotho is a landlocked country in Southern Africa, entirely surrounded by South Africa. It covers approximately 30,355 square kilometers and is renowned for its high altitude, averaging around 2,161 meters (7,090 feet), making it one of the highest countries in the world. The terrain consists of rugged mountains, including the Maloti and Thaba Putsoa ranges, and deep river valleys. The primary river is the Senqu, which flows into the Orange River, providing essential water resources. Lesotho experiences a temperate climate, with cold winters and warm summers; snowfall is common in the mountainous regions during winter. The diverse landscapes support various ecosystems, rich in flora and fauna, particularly adapted to high altitudes. These geographic features significantly influence the culture and economy, with agriculture and livestock farming being vital for the population. 3. Lesotho has a population of approximately 2.2 million people, predominantly consisting of the Basotho ethnic group. The country is characterized by a youthful demographic, with about 35% under the age of 15. Sesotho is the official language, widely spoken alongside English. The majority of the population practices Christianity, with traditional beliefs still prevalent. Urbanization is increasing, with about 29% of people living in urban areas, particularly in the capital, Maseru. High levels of unemployment and poverty impact the demographic landscape, contributing to challenges such as migration and health issues, including a significant HIV/AIDS prevalence.
