Lesotho, formerly known as Basutoland, was renamed to the Kingdom of Lesotho upon independence. It is a country in Southern Africa with an area of over 30,000 square kilometers and a population of about 2 million people. It was previously a British Protectorate. Lesotho gained independence on October 4th 1966 and is a member of the United Nations, the African Union, the Commonwealth of Nations and Southern African Development Community(SADC). Maseru is its capital and largest city. ‘Lesotho’ loosely translates to ‘The Land of the Sotho’. Its people are referred to as Basotho and its currency is Lesotho loti and South African rand.

Lesotho’s position is unusual. It is the Southernmost landlocked country in the world. It is the largest of the world’s three independent states completely surrounded by another country’s territory. San Marino and Vatican City are the other two states. Lesotho is also the only state of its kind outside of the Italian peninsula and is a microstate as well. The country is simply an enclave.

In this video, you are going to discover Lesotho through many facades, so please watch it until the end.

Thank God South Africa is not an aggressive country because it would have taken over Lesotho.

I once drove up to Afriski and the elevation was about 2400m above sea level. It was an amazing view with snow falling.

Showing a traditional family would have been so much better than showing a white man and a Lesotho woman. Not sure what the aim was since this is a video about Lesotho and not white people.

As Britain braced itself for the "Battle of Britain" lasting from July 1940 to May 1941 it knew it had to win to thwart off a Nazi invasion of the British Isles. It was to become the mother of all great air battles with its star fighter-plane being the legendary Spitfire. Basotholand, probably the poorest region in Africa then, nevertheless wanted to help. Beside sending troops who later on saw action in North Africa and elsewhere, it also held a national collection and with the money raised it covered the costs for the production of 24 Spitfires. A real-size model of a Spitfire was donated by the Spitfire Memorial Foundation under the Motto: We remember in gratitude." It can now be viewed in Maseru. The famous Basotho blankets sometimes depict this; indeed a matter of great national pride.

You forgot to mention that there are more Basotho people in South Africa than the entire country of Lesotho. I mean South African Basotho.
